LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Town of Middlesex upon the occa-
sion of dedicating a Pomeroy Foundation Historic Roadside Marker to the
Overackers Corners School

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts
of those organizations and individuals which seek to bring recognition
to historical places within the State of New York, and in doing so, help
to ensure that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved
and shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Town of Middlesex upon the occasion of dedicating a Pomeroy Founda-
tion Historic Roadside Marker to the Overackers Corners School on
Sunday, July 13, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The William G. Pomeroy Foundation commemorates historic plac-
es across New York State by awarding grants to install historic markers
for buildings built in the years 1740-1900; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Middlesex has chosen to dedicate a William G.
Pomeroy Foundation historic marker to the Overackers Corners School in
recognition of its important place in the history of its community; and
WHEREAS, Built from bricks produced by a local factory, the Overackers
Corners School first opened in 1874, and was named after the local Over-
acker family who lived nearby; it featured large windows on three sides
which provided light, and a stove in the middle of the room for heat;
drinking water was carried to the school from a nearby well; and
WHEREAS, For many years, the Overackers Corners School provided quali-
ty education to the children of the Town of Middlesex, teaching such
subjects as reading, spelling, arithmetic, and geography; and
WHEREAS, In 1933, this esteemed schoolhouse was pictured in the maga-
zine, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC; and
WHEREAS, The Overackers Corners School closed in 1937, and was
purchased by Leon Button two years later; the Button family continues to
own the building and now leases it to the Middlesex Heritage Group; and
WHEREAS, The Overackers Corners School is listed on the New York State
Register of Historic Places, and remains a unique historical treasure
for all to see; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for the Overackers Corners School, and
for all of the individuals who have worked to bring proper attention to
a place and time which merits recognition in the grand panorama of the
history of our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Town of Middlesex upon the occasion of dedicating a Pomeroy
Foundation Historic Roadside Marker to the Overackers Corners School;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Win Harper, President of the Middlesex Heritage Group.
