LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Luz Maria Negron upon the occasion of
being named the New York State 2014 Youth of the Year by the Boys and
Girls Clubs of America
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Luz Maria
Negron upon the occasion of being named the New York State 2014 Youth of
the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America; she was honored at an
awards ceremony held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Youth of the Year is a leadership development program which
recognizes and advances the efforts of Boys and Girls Clubs members ages
16-18 in community service, contributions to family, academic perform-
ance, poise and public speaking ability; it is the highest honor a club
member can receive; and
WHEREAS, Luz Maria Negron was selected among 31 outstanding youth for
her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to
the community; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed young woman has overcome many difficult obsta-
cles in her life, including being born with HIV; despite these chal-
lenges, she has become an integral part of her community through her
numerous volunteer efforts; and
WHEREAS, With a sense of civic responsibility, Luz Maria Negron
contributes her time helping children at the Club, while also preparing
and serving meals at a local food pantry in the Bronx; in addition, she
educates fellow students on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexual-
ly transmitted diseases; and
WHEREAS, Respected in her community for her volunteer service, Luz
Maria Negron is also an excellent student who participates in many
extracurricular activities; she is the captain of both her swimming and
softball teams, and is a lifeguard at the Madison Square Boys & Girls
Club in the Bronx; and
WHEREAS, Luz Maria Negron plans to attend college and pursue her Ph.D.
in Forensic Science in order to detect evidence in support of those who
have been victims of crimes; and
WHEREAS, Displaying a strong sense of duty and a commitment to others,
Luz Maria Negron represents the best development of the potential which
is inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Luz Maria Negron upon the occasion of being named the New York
State 2014 Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Luz Maria Negron.
