LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the life of Samuel Clyde Jones,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Clyde Jones, a longtime resident of Antwerp, New York,
died on May 2, 2014, at the age of 99; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Clyde Jones was born on January 9, 1915, and attended
Murray State College, working as a high school teacher in Bandana,
Kentucky, until his induction into the United States Army in May of
1941; and
WHEREAS, Stationed at Pine Camp, New York, later named Fort Drum,
Samuel Jones was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1942 and sent to
the Pacific theater with the 457th Field Artillery Division of the 11th
Airborne where he served from May of 1943 to November of 1945; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Jones was awarded the Silver Star for bravery under
fire and two Bronze Stars; he was honorably discharged from service in
February 1946 as an Army Captain; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his military service, in 2011 Samuel Jones
was chosen to participate in the Honor Flight as a World War II veteran;
and
WHEREAS, While stationed at Pine Camp, he met his wife, Betty Gates,
and they were married on October 9, 1942, in Columbus, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Following his military service, Samuel Jones enjoyed a 30
year career in public education, including his work as a teacher and a
principal at Antwerp Public School, and as a math teacher at Indian
River Central School; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement from teaching, Samuel Jones worked
with the United States Customs Service; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Jones was an active member of the Antwerp community
throughout his life; he was a member of the First Congregational Church
of Antwerp, where he also served as Deacon and as Superintendent of the
Sunday School; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he served as District Grand Master of Masonic
Lodge 226, and Deputy Grand Master of the Jefferson-Lewis District; he
was a past president of the Rotary Club and a 50 year member of the
American Legion Post 916; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Jones was also active in the Boy Scouts of America; he
was a member of the Crosby Library Association, the Hillside Cemetery
Association and the American Contract Bridge League; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Jones was a loving husband for 71 years and a devoted
father to his three children, Betty Lou, Mary Jane and Sam, and the
loving grandfather to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS, Samuel Jones distinguished himself in his military service to
his country, in his work as an educator, and by his sincere dedication
and contribution to the welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Samuel Clyde Jones leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the life of Samuel Clyde Jones, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Samuel Clyde Jones.
