LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Olean Police Department Patrolman Brian
Cross for his heroism in saving the life of an Olean resident
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary citizens who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations and, in so doing,
preserve the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Olean Police Department Patrolman Brian Cross in recognition of his
heroic actions in saving the life of an Olean resident; and
WHEREAS, On February 12, 2014, Patrolman Cross was on a routine patrol
through the City of Olean when he noticed smoke coming over a building
near Wayne Street around three o'clock in the morning; he drove toward
the smoke and found a fire coming from the back of a two-story wooden
residence on North Ninth Street; he reported the situation to police
dispatchers and broke down the back door to search for any occupants;
and
WHEREAS, Upon entering the burning residence, Patrolman Cross found
the resident asleep in her first-story bedroom and safely evacuated her
from the home; the fire, which was started because of an electrical
malfunction, took 23 Olean City Firefighters and a pumper truck from the
Allegany Volunteer Fire Department to extinguish the blaze; and
WHEREAS, Patrolman Cross, through his spontaneous and selfless
actions, demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of
others; it is fitting and proper that we who are beneficiaries of those
who risk their lives in the line of duty express our appreciation and
eternal gratitude for their courageous acts; now, therefore, be it
