LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Hyde Park
Railroad Station

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts
of those who seek to bring recognition to historical places within the
State of New York, and in doing so, help to ensure that the complete
history of our State and Nation is preserved and shared with present
generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Hyde Park Railroad Station; and
WHEREAS, The Hyde Park Railroad Station is located on River Road in
Hyde Park, New York, at Riverside Park; a station was built at this
location in 1851, when the Hudson River Railroad was constructed from
New York City to Albany; that structure was torn down and replaced by
the current station in 1914; and
WHEREAS, The architects of the Hyde Park Station, Reed and Stern and
Warren and Wetmore, were the same who designed Grand Central Station in
New York City; during its construction, electricity had not yet been run
down River Road; and
WHEREAS, The closest electric lines to the Hyde Park Railroad Station
were along what is now Route 9; the station was built with electric
wiring, but was not connected for several years; until electric street-
lights were put in on River Road, the road to the station was lit by gas
lamps; and
WHEREAS, Regularly scheduled passenger service to the Hyde Park Rail-
road Station began in 1851, and in 1953, after over a century, regular
passenger service was suspended; and
WHEREAS, The last year the New York Central listed the Hyde Park
Station on its list of stations was 1958, subsequently the outer two
tracks of the four-track "Water Level Route" were removed, and the
entrances to the tunnel passage serving the southbound platform were
boarded over; during this time the New York Central sold the abandoned
station on the Town of Hyde Park; and
WHEREAS, Since 1975, the Hudson Valley Railroad Society (HVRRS) has
been restoring the Hyde Park Station; proceeds from the HVRRS's yearly
Train Show help continue to raise funds for restoration; and
WHEREAS, A great deal of repair work, both interior and exterior had
to be done by the society; windows, doors, exterior trim, as well as the
Spanish tile roof had to be repaired or replaced to ensure the station
was weather tight; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the interior work included rebuilding the ticket
booth, as well as refurbishing the waiting room, baggage room and bench-
es; wiring, plumbing and heating systems had to be rebuilt, and was done
at the Society's own expense; and
WHEREAS, Today, inside the Hyde Park Railroad Station you will find
displays depicting the area's railroading past, running model trains,
and knowledgeable railroad enthusiasts who can answer your questions
about the great "Iron Horse"; and
WHEREAS, This historical Station is located at the foot of the hill
which is formed by West Market Street and River Road that follows the
south wall of the Vanderbilt's Estate; although the station is inactive,
it will always remain a distinguished part of the history of this Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for Hyde Park Railroad Station, and for
all of the individuals who have worked to bring proper attention to a

place and time which merits recognition in the grand panorama of the
history of our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Hyde Park Railroad Station.
