LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Maybrook
Engine Company No. 1

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commemorate the 100th Anni-
versary of Maybrook Engine Company No. 1, and to honor its past and
present firefighting members for 100 years of fire protection to the
citizens of Maybrook, New York, and its surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, Formed on July 14, 1914, Maybrook Chemical Engine Company No.
1 elected Dr. J.I. Cotter as its first Chief and James F. Shields as its
first President; later that year, a chemical engine was purchased and
Maybrook's first firehouse was erected on a site on Wallace Avenue about
one-half block down from the present firehouse; and
WHEREAS, Many area residents donated items to help in the construction
of the firehouse, along with the Central New England Railroad, which
donated a large iron wheel to be used as the first fire alarm; and
WHEREAS, In 1940, a combination firehouse and municipal building was
constructed at 204 Wallace Avenue which completely housed Maybrook
Engine Company No. 1; and
WHEREAS, The Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary was formed
in 1953 and it has aided the company tremendously; and
WHEREAS, In 1970, Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 built a new two-bay
truck room adjacent to the existing firehouse which was funded complete-
ly by the fire department; and
WHEREAS, Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 became a District on January 1,
1987, and its first Board of Commissioners was comprised of Allen Abra-
hams, Donald Kunze, John Jardine, Charles Conroy and Joseph Legere; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, the firehouse had extensive alterations done and a
new four-bay truck room was built; and
WHEREAS, The members of Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 adopted the
first Service Award Program in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Fire departments are an integral part of community protection
services in every locality of our State; during the past 100 years, the
courageous and devoted firefighters of Maybrook Engine Company No. 1
have valiantly responded to all types of fire emergencies and have won
the praise and respect of the community which they serve; and
WHEREAS, With a membership of dedicated firefighters, the record of
Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 in public service and fire protection is
one to be envied; for 24 hours a day, for 365 days a year, for 100
years, whenever the alarm sounded, these noble volunteers left their
homes and went to the aid of their neighbors; and
WHEREAS, The brave firefighters of Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 are
prepared to risk their lives every day to help save the lives of others
and to protect homes and property from the destruction caused by fire;
and
WHEREAS, In addition to the skill and devoted service demonstrated by
individual firefighters, Maybrook Engine Company No. 1 reflects the
history and development of firefighting over the past 100 years; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body cannot express sufficient gratitude to
those devoted individuals who recognize that the preservation of life
and property is a sacred responsibility and who make that responsibility
their own by serving as firefighters; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that we should give
special recognition to those who work so assiduously for the betterment
of their communities, and acknowledge publicly the heroic good works
performed by the volunteer fire departments of this great Empire State,
their officers and auxiliaries; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
proudly commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Maybrook Engine Company No.
1; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Maybrook Engine Company No. 1.
