LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Barbara Corker, the New York Department
President of the American Legion Auxiliary, upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the Empire Girls State Program

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate and
recognize certain individuals who give their time and support to serve
the veterans of this great Nation and Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Barbara Corker, the New York Department President of the American Legion
Auxiliary, upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by the Empire Girls State Program; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary administers
hundreds of volunteer programs, gives thousands of hours to its communi-
ties and their veterans, and raises millions of dollars to support its
various volunteer programs; and
WHEREAS, Empire Girls State is a hands-on week-long educational work-
shop, focusing on Americanism and the political process; the goal of the
program is to help students to better understand democratic ideals and
the part individuals play in carrying out these ideals; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Corker embodies these ideals and has been a member of
the Throggs Neck Memorial Unit #1456 of Bronx County for 35 years; she
has worked tirelessly on behalf of veterans and their families through-
out New York State, serving as the President of the First District three
times, as well as Department Vice President before becoming the Depart-
ment President; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, Barbara Corker was awarded the National Award for
National Security for Best Overall National Security Program activities
in the Eastern Division; in 2011, she was awarded the National Award for
Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation for Best Overall Veterans Affairs &
Rehabilitation Program in the Eastern Division; and
WHEREAS, In the past year, Barbara Corker has focused on Operation
Comfort Warriors, a program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded,
injured, or ill military personnel by providing them with comfort items
not usually supplied by the federal government; Operation Comfort Warri-
ors was built on love, loyalty, and friendship, and has steadily grown,
raising over $50,000 for our veterans so far; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Corker truly exemplifies the American Legion Auxilia-
ry's motto of "Service, Not Self"; she has served as Department Chairman
for Cancer Awareness, Children & Youth, and Membership; she is a Certi-
fied Leadership Instructor, has served as a housemother for the Empire
Girls State Program, and has been an instructor at the American Legion
Auxiliary College; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and honor those who have committed their lives to improve and
support the lives of others, particularly those who have served our
great nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Barbara Corker, the New York Department President of the American
Legion Auxiliary, upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the Empire Girls State Program; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Barbara Corker.
