LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Charles L. Battaglia upon the occasion
of his induction into the Geneseo Central School District Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Charles L. Battaglia has given not only of his time and ener-
gies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Charles L.
Battaglia upon the occasion of his induction into the Geneseo Central
School District Hall of Fame on May 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Charles L. Battaglia of Waterloo, New York, received this
auspicious honor for his quiet leadership since 1949, which has changed
both the physical landscape and curriculum of several school communi-
ties; and
WHEREAS, Charles L. Battaglia spent more than 40 years as an elementa-
ry school teacher, coach, and principal in Moravia, Waterloo, and Romu-
lus school districts, and was also principal of Skoi-Yase School in
Waterloo for 33 years; and
WHEREAS, Born in Geneseo, New York, one of six children born to immi-
grants who spoke little English, Charles L. Battaglia graduated from
Geneseo High School in 1944; he earned education and administration
degrees from SUNY Geneseo and Syracuse University; and
WHEREAS, In both high school and college, Charles L. Battaglia was a
recognized athlete in golf, soccer, baseball, and basketball, and
coached all four sports in several communities, including Moravia, Gene-
va, Waterloo, and Seneca Falls; and
WHEREAS, Charles L. Battaglia's legacy, however, is his passion for
child's play as a learning experience, and for incorporating play and
safety into school curriculums; and
WHEREAS, As an advocate for playgrounds at schools, Charles L. Battag-
lia was instrumental in getting playgrounds built at each school in
Waterloo, and encouraged the same in other districts in central New
York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Charles L. Battaglia founded Summer Youth
Programs in both Waterloo and Moravia, and was named an Honorary Life
Member of the Waterloo Fire Department for initiating and implementing
the first school Fire Safety Program; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Charles L. Battaglia held membership in and
leadership positions in many regional and state educational associ-
ations, and participated in a variety of civic and community organiza-
tions; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, Charles L. Battaglia retired, but was called back to
serve as interim principal for Romulus Central Schools within a year;
and
WHEREAS, In addition to his induction into the Hall of Fame, the Romu-
lus School District honored Charles L. Battaglia on their Wall of Fame
for his accomplishments and service, and he was awarded the Lifetime
Achievement Award for his significant educational contributions,
outstanding distinction, achievements, and contributions in his career
and to his community; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife of 61 years, Marie, who
feels privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Educators such as Charles L. Battaglia provide a tremendous
service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of

young people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in
their future years; and
WHEREAS, Charles L. Battaglia has clearly had an enduring impact on
the youth of the Moravia, Waterloo, and Romulus school districts, as
well as on the community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition
and applause for his impressive dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Charles L. Battaglia upon the occasion of his induction into the
Geneseo Central School District Hall of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Charles L. Battaglia.
