LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Martin Brecher upon the occasion of
his retirement after 30 years of distinguished service and leadership at
Roswell Park Cancer Institute

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those individuals within the medical field who distinguish
themselves through professional excellence and who have made significant
contributions to the quality of life of citizens in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Martin Brecher upon the occasion of his retirement after 30 years of
distinguished service and leadership at Roswell Park Cancer Institute;
he will step down from his post as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics
in July 2014; and
WHEREAS, For 30 years, Dr. Martin Brecher has made a qualitative
difference in the lives of children with pediatric cancer and their
families; and
WHEREAS, A leader in his field, Dr. Martin Brecher is the Waldemar J.
Kaminski Chair in Pediatrics at Roswell Park, Chief of the
Hematology/Oncology Division at Women and Children's Hospital of
Buffalo, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine
and Biomedical Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo, as
well as a Clinical Adjunct Faculty member at Rochester Institute of
Technology; and
WHEREAS, From 1977 to 1989 he was a Cancer Research Pediatrician at
Roswell Park; he remains particularly interested in clinical trials for
childhood cancers, targeted therapy for pediatric cancers, the long-term
cognitive effects of treatment for children with the most common type of
childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and risk factors
for childhood ALL; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Brecher completed his medical education at the
School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, SUNY Buffalo; he did his
residency at Children's Hospital of Buffalo, and was a Fellow in Pedia-
tric Hematology/Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute; and
WHEREAS, This visionary healer has received numerous accolades and
awards for his work; regularly included in rankings of best doctors in
Western New York, and the United States, Dr. Martin Brecher is also the
recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award; Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society of Western New York: Service Award; Camp Good Days and
Special Times: Spirit of Teddi Humanitarian Award; University at Buffalo
School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences: Alumni Achievement Award;
Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo: Burt P. Flickinger Jr. Physi-
cian's Award; University at Buffalo/Women and Children's Hospital of
Buffalo: John Paroski House Staff Teaching Award in Pediatrics; Univer-
sity at Buffalo: Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Distinguished Teaching Award;
University at Buffalo/Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo: Freder-
ick B. Wilkes Teaching Award in Pediatrics; Leukemia Society of America:
Outstanding Professional Achievement; and the Leukemia Society of Ameri-
ca: Supporting Trustee Award; and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with whom
he worked, Dr. Martin Brecher will be remembered for his compassion,
integrity, and profound commitment to his patients and their families;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Brecher has proven himself to be a great asset to
medicine and to the health and welfare of the citizens of the State of
New York; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Martin Brecher and to wish him continued success in all his
future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Martin Brecher.
