LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Ed Rimkus posthumously upon the occasion
of his induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall
of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Ed
Rimkus posthumously upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenec-
tady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame, to be celebrated at the
17th Annual Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame and
Reunion Dinner on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Proctor's Theatre in
Schenectady, New York; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Mont Pleasant High School Class of 1932, Ed
Rimkus was a multi-sport athlete at the original Schenectady High
School, as well as at Mont Pleasant; and
WHEREAS, Ed Rimkus played varsity football on the 1931 Mont Pleasant
High School team which went undefeated under Athletic Hall of Fame Coach
Sig Makofski; and
WHEREAS, After graduating high school, this esteemed man played foot-
ball at St. Lawrence University (SLU), where he became team captain and
contributed as a lineman, blocking back, and kicker; in addition, he was
a member of the varsity track team at SLU; and
WHEREAS, First introduced to the sport of bobsledding in 1947, Ed
Rimkus finished second as part of a four-man bobsled team at the Olympic
Trials in Lake Placid, New York, qualifying him to compete in the 1948
Olympics; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man would go on to win a gold medal as part
of the United States four-man bobsled team at the 1948 Winter Olympics
in St. Moritz, Switzerland; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards for his many achievements,
Ed Rimkus was named the 1948 Schenectady Athlete of the Year, and was
selected as a member of the SLU Athletic Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the late Ed
Rimkus; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Ed Rimkus for his
extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his skill,
dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor Ed Rimkus posthumously upon the occasion of
his induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of
Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Ed Rimkus, and the Schenectady City School
District Athletic Hall of Fame.
