LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Murray Melton upon the occasion of his
induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of
Fame
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Murray Melton upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady
City School District Athletic Hall of Fame, to be celebrated at the 17th
Annual Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame and Reun-
ion Dinner on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Proctor's Theatre in Sche-
nectady, New York; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Nott Terrace High School Class of 1957, Murray
Melton was both an outstanding basketball player and baseball player at
the high school and collegiate levels; and
WHEREAS, Considered one of the greatest shooters in local sports
history, Murray Melton played three years of varsity basketball at Nott
Terrace under Athletic Hall of Famer Walt Przybylo; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man led the Class A League in scoring as a
junior and a senior, and set the single game Nott Terrace High School
scoring record with 42 points against Watertown; and
WHEREAS, Murray Melton averaged nearly 29 points per game as a senior
and was the first Schenectady City School District player to score over
500 points in a season; his career total of 997 points makes him the
most prolific scorer in Nott Terrace High School history; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards for his basketball accom-
plishments, Murray Melton won the Bill Mayotte Memorial Trophy, and was
named Gazette MVP and Winter Athlete of the Year by the Schenectady
Junior Chamber of Commerce; furthermore, he was nominated for a berth on
the North team in the United States All-Star game in Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, Murray Melton also displayed his athletic talents in the
sport of baseball, where he was an undefeated pitcher and played first
base on three Nott Terrace varsity teams; and
WHEREAS, An integral part of a Nott Terrace team that went 11-0 in
1957, Murray Melton went 5-0 as a pitcher that year; and
WHEREAS, After graduating high school, Murray Melton attended Columbia
University where he continued his exceptional career in both sports; at
one time, his scoring prowess in basketball placed him at number three
in career points at Columbia; furthermore, his baseball abilities led to
him receiving an offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers; and
WHEREAS, After College, Murray Melton compiled a 60-7 pitching record
with the Schenectady Twilight League; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Murray Melton; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Murray Melton for his
extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his skill,
dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor Murray Melton upon the occasion of his
induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of
Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Murray Melton, and the Schenectady City School District
Athletic Hall of Fame.
