LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Maslah Muya upon the occasion of her
designation as the 2014 Central Village Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse,
New York Youth of the Year

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Maslah Muya upon the occasion of her designation as the 2014 Central
Village Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse, New York Youth of the Year; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious award is the highest honor a Boys & Girls
Club member can receive; it recognizes outstanding contributions to
family, school, community and to the Boys & Girls Club; and
WHEREAS, Maslah Muya migrated to the United States in 2004 with her
mother, Salme, and five siblings in hopes of finding a better life; she
is one of the founders of Young Scholars, a program which supports the
educational achievements of teenage refugees and immigrant youth, and
seeks to instill in them the belief that college is attainable; and
WHEREAS, An avid volunteer, Maslah Muya gives of her time and energies
as a member of Syracuse Teens on the Move with Prevention (STOMP), a
group dedicated to helping teens make positive choices about drugs, sex
and violence; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she provides a service to her community by work-
ing at Upward Bound, a program which helps youth prepare for college;
and
WHEREAS, As a member of the Central Village Boys & Girls Club of Syra-
cuse, New York, Maslah Muya has been instrumental in helping her peers
and teaching a citizenship class; and
WHEREAS, Maslah Muya plans to enroll in medical school at SUNY Upstate
Medical University where she hopes to become a Pediatrician who will
help to narrow the language barrier between physicians and immigrant
parents with young children; and
WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative
Body to wish Maslah Muya continued success throughout her school years
and beyond; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor the youth
of today, and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Maslah Muya upon the occasion of her designation as the 2014
Central Village Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse, New York Youth of the
Year; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Maslah Muya.
