LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee upon the occasion of the celebration of its 100th Anniversary
on June 12, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations
which devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citi-
zens; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee upon the occasion of the celebration
of its 100th Anniversary of its founding, and to recognize its signif-
icant contributions to empower and revitalize developing communities
around the world; and
WHEREAS, To observe this auspicious milestone, the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) will host a reception commencing a
Centennial Exhibit at the New York Historical Society on Thursday, June
12, 2014, with approximately 200 Jewish community leaders and philan-
thropists in attendance from the JDC Board as well as other major Jewish
organizations in New York; and
WHEREAS, The reception will preview the New-York Historical Society's
multi-media exhibit from the JDC Archives, observing a century of
achievement; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1804, the New-York Historical Society is one of
America's preeminent cultural institutions, dedicated to fostering
research and presenting history and art exhibitions and public programs
which reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of
today; and
WHEREAS, The JDC was founded in New York City in 1914; 100 years
later, it is recognized as a world leading international Jewish humani-
tarian assistance organization; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed and renowned organization serves the global
Jewish community and others in need; JDC now works in more than 70 coun-
tries, impacting more than one million lives each year, alleviating
hunger and hardship, rescuing Jews in danger, creating lasting
connections to Jewish life, and providing immediate relief and long-term
development support for victims of natural and man-made disasters; and
WHEREAS, The JDC has pioneered high-impact programs which provide
access to education, health care, food, shelter, and assistance with job
training and placement for governments and other organizations to
utilize; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the JDC has been instrumental in the transforma-
tion of the lives of women and girls throughout the world through initi-
atives which provide access to health care and education, encouraging
them to overcome gender barriers, receive an education, and become
community leaders; and
WHEREAS, Today, the JDC engages many young individuals in the United
States to participate in rescue, renewal, and revitalization work
through service and volunteer programs around the world; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, the JDC's distinguished record
merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative Body
and the people of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee upon the occa-
sion of the celebration of its 100th Anniversary on June 12, 2014; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
