LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the North-
port-East Northport Public Library

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Northport-East Northport Public
Library, to be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Northport-East Northport Public Library is a free public
library with a mission to inform, educate and culturally enrich people
of all ages through the selection, organization, promotion and dissem-
ination of the printed word and other forms of expression; and
WHEREAS, Chartered by the State of New York in June of 1914, the
original Northport Public Library was designed by Harry E. Donnell, a
well-known New York City architect; it held its grand opening on Decem-
ber 13, 1915, with an evening of music and speeches; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, this esteemed institution has been an
integral part of community life; during World War I, the library aided
the war effort through its participation in a program to send books to
troops overseas; when the Great Depression struck, the library's down-
stairs meeting room became a women's workroom, mending donated clothing
that was then distributed to families in need; and
WHEREAS, In 1939, East Northport residents formed the Library Associ-
ation of East Northport to establish a public library in the community;
the following year, the East Northport Public Library opened as a branch
of the Northport Public Library; and
WHEREAS, During World War II and in the years that followed, the
Library system continued to strengthen its collection and expand
services, while supporting America's troops; book donations were again
sent to soldiers overseas, and Red Cross volunteers used the Main Street
library building meeting room to prepare surgical dressings; and
WHEREAS, In the 1960s, construction was completed on a new Northport
Library and an extension to the East-Northport Library; these spacious,
new library facilities allowed the system to respond to the interests of
the still-growing community and to a proliferation of media and informa-
tion resources; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1982, computer access steadily expanded from a
single computer to multiple work stations word processing and other
software applications; in 1995, the Library offered internet access to
its patrons for the first time; and
WHEREAS, During the 1990s, the Northport and East Northport Public
Libraries both moved to beautiful new facilities, offering wonderful
services, computer resources, and programming to the entire community;
and
WHEREAS, As the Northport-East Northport Public Library marks 100
years of service, it continues to be a vital and relevant part of civic
life and looks forward to continuing its tradition of meeting the educa-
tional, informational, and cultural needs of the community by providing
innovative, superior library service; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Northport-
East Northport Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful
growth, while remaining a vital place for area residents for many years
to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Northport-East Northport Public
Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Northport-East Northport Public Library.
