LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Munson's
Building Supplies

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate the
long histories of certain family business endeavors, which are the
cornerstone of economic success in this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of Munson's Building Supplies, to be cele-
brated with an Open House on Friday, June 20, 2014, Oneonta, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Munson's Building Supplies began as a roller-skating rink
when Fred and Audrey Munson opened it in 1955, as a part-time business;
in 1963, a local businessman convinced the couple to turn the rink into
a lumber yard; and
WHEREAS, Established on May 5, 1964, Munson's Building Supplies is a
family-owned hardware and building supplies company located in Oneonta,
New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, Munson's Building Supplies joined the True Value
buying group and added hardware to the lumber business; and
WHEREAS, The original 6,000 square-foot building and outer buildings
were destroyed in an electrical fire in 1979; the outpouring of support
from the community and loyal customers was instrumental in the rebirth
of Munson's Building Supplies; and
WHEREAS, Fred and Audrey Munson sold the business to their children,
making Steve Munson, Mike Munson, and their brother-in-law Bob Goble,
co-owners; at 92 years old, Fred Munson continues to go to work daily;
Audrey, who as a bookkeeper was a driving force towards the business'
success, retired in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Today, Munson's Building Supplies' 1,600 accounts represent
contractors, carpenters and home improvement businesses throughout the
region; the store sells a variety of building supplies, from boards and
nails to windows and doors; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, this exemplary business has approximately 19,000
square-feet dedicated to retail sales and showroom space, as well as
another 2,800 square-feet designated for rental equipment, which ranges
from small drills to excavators; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Munson's Building Supplies; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Munson's Building Supplies, Oneonta, New York.
