LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 250th Anniversary of Ticondero-
ga, New York on July 24, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 250th Anniversary of Ticonderoga, New York, to be celebrated
on Thursday, July 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The history of Ticonderoga began on July 25, 1764, when King
George III granted 2,000 acres of land to Lieutenant John Stoughton, the
first English settler of the area; and
WHEREAS, Ticonderoga became the site of America's first victory in the
Revolutionary War, after Ethan Allen and his men captured its famous
fort from the British in 1775; and
WHEREAS, In 1804, the Town of Ticonderoga was officially created;
since then, it has grown into a community of good schools, strong
churches, and active service and cultural organizations; and
WHEREAS, Ticonderoga residents cultivated the rich soils of the Cham-
plain Valley not only to provide foodstuffs, but to raise, breed, and
race the world famous horses known as Ticonderoga Trotters; and
WHEREAS, A center of industry, Ticonderoga harnessed the water power
of the LaChute River to run mills that would produce lumber and refine
iron ore and graphite; in addition, the town was actively involved in
the production of textiles, boat construction, and more recently, the
manufacturing of paper and electricity generation; and
WHEREAS, Over its 250 year history, generations would use the unique
resources of "the Land between Two Waters," to create a community which
not only helped America win its independence but would also become a
manufacturing, commercial, and transportation center; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, Ticonderoga continues its commitment to enhancing the quali-
ty of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institutional
and educational climate, and providing all essential services; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Ticonderoga, New York, recognizing
the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Ticonderoga.
