LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 60 and
Gallup's Change Bridge No. 39 upon the occasion of receiving the 2013
Erie Canalway Heritage Award of Excellence
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by its
exceptional governmental, cultural, educational and recreational facili-
ties and institutions; and
WHEREAS, It is also the sense of this Legislative Body that insti-
tutions and facilities that give positive definition to the profile and
disposition of the communities of the State of New York profoundly
strengthen our society with their commitment; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 60 and Gallup's Change Bridge No. 39 upon
the occasion of receiving the 2013 Erie Canalway Heritage Award of
Excellence; and
WHEREAS, The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor spans 524 miles
across the full expanse of upstate New York, encompassing the Erie,
Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic align-
ments, as well as more than 230 canal communities; and
WHEREAS, The Eric Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission and
the Erie Canalway Heritage Fund work in partnership to preserve our
extraordinary heritage, to promote the Corridor as a world class tourism
destination, and to foster vibrant communities connected by the water-
way; and
WHEREAS, Eric Canalway Heritage Awards of Excellence honor significant
places of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and recognize
excellence in advancing the goals of the Erie Canalway Preservation and
Management Plan; and
WHEREAS, One of the finest surviving locks of the Enlarged Erie Canal,
Lock 60 opened in 1841; the lock was later doubled and lengthened to
meet the demands of canal traffic; each stone chamber in the lock is
18-feet wide by 110-feet long; and
WHEREAS, Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 60 was abandoned in 1914 and
replaced by Lock 30 of the Eric Barge Canal; and
WHEREAS, Once completely overgrown and forgotten by time, Enlarged
Erie Canal Lock 60 and the bridge abutments at Gallup's Change Bridge
No. 39 have been transformed by a 25-year preservation effort in the
Town of Macedon; it is now an extraordinary park that is accessible to
visitors coming by boat, bike, footpath, and car; and
WHEREAS, The historic canal sites at Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 60 and
Gallup's Change Bridge No. 39 are located within a one-mile stretch
along the Erie Canal and Erie Canalway Trail that features numerous
preserved canal structures from the 1800s; and
WHEREAS, Together with nearby restored Aldrich Change Bridge and
Palmrya Aqueduct at Macedon-Palmyra Park, Lock 60 and Gallup's Change
Bridge present visitors an unparalleled opportunity to envision the Erie
Canal of the 1800s while also enjoying today's canal and trail; and
WHEREAS. This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Enlarged Erie
Canal Lock 60 and Gallup's Change Bridge No. 39 in Macedon, New York;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions, institutions and facilities of such noble aims and accomplish-
ments are brought to our attention, they should be recognized by all the
citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 60 and Gallup's Change Bridge No.
39 upon the occasion of receiving the 2013 Erie Canalway Heritage Award
of Excellence; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Macedon Town Supervisor William Hammond.
