LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew H. Cuomo to
proclaim August 15, 2013, as Korean Independence Day in New York State

WHEREAS, The year 2013 will mark the 68th Anniversary of Korean Inde-
pendence; and
WHEREAS, On August 15, 1945 South Korea gained its independence from
Imperial Japan's colonial rule; and
WHEREAS, GWANGBOKJEOL, ("Restoration of Light Day") is celebrated
annually on August 15, and is a public holiday in South Korea, commem-
orating Victory over Japan Day, which is the day the United States and
their allies liberated Korea from Japanese rule; and
WHEREAS, The Korean descendants who immigrated to the state of New
York have become an invaluable part of our community fabric; upholding
the ideals of freedom, liberty, and equality with continued civic
participation to strengthen the foundation of democracy; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that we should take
note of those citizens in this State who are of Korean descent and who
have contributed with the unparalleled dedication and services to the
educational, social, economic and cultural values; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim August 13, 2013, as
Korean Independence Day in New York State, and to publicly encourage the
citizens of New York to reflect upon the contributions of the Korean
community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York, and to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York,
the Korean American Association of Greater New York, and the Korean
American Association of Queens.
