LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Austin upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Henry Crandall Award on September 6,
2013
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John Austin
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Henry Crandall
Award by the Crandall Public Library, to be celebrated at its Hooray for
Hollywood 2013 Gala: Lights, Camera, Fiction, on Friday, September 6,
2013, at the Queensbury Hotel, Glens Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, The award is named in honor of Henry Crandall, a local lumber
baron and philanthropist who, in 1892, contributed the necessary funds
to establish the library in Glens Falls, New York; and
WHEREAS, John Austin will receive this auspicious honor in recognition
of his consistent dedication to both his community and the local
libraries; and
WHEREAS, Born in Cambridge, and raised in Glens Falls and Queensbury,
John Austin graduated from Glens Falls High School and Dartmouth
College; and
WHEREAS, He was the editor of the Dartmouth College newspaper, and
later worked as a reporter, editor and editorial director of THE GLENS
FALLS TIMES, a former local afternoon daily newspaper; and
WHEREAS, He then graduated from Albany Law School and went on to serve
as Warren County Family Court and County Court Judge; in the early
1970s, he served as a Queensbury councilman and town supervisor, and led
construction of the town's water filtration plant on the Hudson River;
and
WHEREAS, John Austin was also a member of the Crandall Public Library
Board of Trustees from 1972-1985, and served as president of the South-
ern Adirondack Library System Board of Trustees from 1985-1995; and
WHEREAS, His multifaceted professions includes work as a newspaper
reporter and editor, lawyer, town supervisor, judge, historian and
author; and
WHEREAS, John Austin's life and career is truly a testament to how one
man pursued a commitment to preserving and protecting the most cherished
aspects of the community, namely its culture and history, its beauty,
its children and its future; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Austin upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Henry Crandall Award on September 6, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Austin.
