LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Will Skudin upon the occasion of his
being named 2013 Surfer of the Year by EASTERN SURFING MAGAZINE
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding athletes who distinguish themselves through their excep-
tional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Will Skudin upon the occasion of his being named 2013 Surfer of the Year
by EASTERN SURFING MAGAZINE in their 12th Annual ESeMMY Awards, on Janu-
ary 1, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Professional surfer Will Skudin is the first New Yorker to
receive the coveted title "Surfer of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, Will Skudin finished 17th in the world during the 2013 season
among the best big wave surfers on the globe; he earned an interview in
and made the cover of the June 2013 issue of EASTERN SURFING MAGAZINE
after an epic Tahitian session, and earned another article in November
2013 issue and a Billabong XXL Ride of the Year entry for his exploits
in Ireland during the 2013 fall season, and competed in the Punta Galea
Challenge on the Big Wave World Tour; and
WHEREAS, Will Skudin is looking forward to two other Big Wave World
Tour contests: SEATKA Pro Oregon, and Dive N' Surf at Todos Santos in
Baja California, Mexico, home to waves that reach heights of up to 60
feet; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Long Beach, New York, where he is co-owner of
Skudin Surf surfing school, Will Skudin rode his first wave at age of 6,
and started chasing "Mavericks" off the coast of California at the age
of 16; and
WHEREAS, Despite nearly losing his life after being slammed by a near-
ly 70-foot wave while surfing off the coast of Todos Santos in January
2007, this courageous athlete continuously strives for excellence in the
sport that is his passion; and
WHEREAS, Will Skudin's accomplishments have brought pride and honor to
Oceanside, and the entire State of New York, and thereby merit the high-
est commendation of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Will Skudin upon the occasion of his being named 2013 Surfer of
the Year by EASTERN SURFING MAGAZINE; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Will Skudin.
