LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Ellen Hughes upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2013 Citizen of the Year Award by the
Seneca County Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Ellen Hughes has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Ellen Hughes
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2013 Citizen of
the Year Award by the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, to be cele-
brated at the Chamber's Annual Dinner Meeting on Friday, January 24,
2014, at the Waterloo/Seneca Falls Holiday Inn, Waterloo, New York; and
WHEREAS, Ellen Hughes has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Born in Rochester, New York, Ellen Hughes has taught Spanish
for 27 years and 26 years were spent at Waterloo High School; and
WHEREAS, Ellen Hughes is the District Governor of more than 60 Rotary
Clubs in District 7120; in this capacity, she hosts Rotarians from
around the world who visit Seneca County, and is only the third woman to
be named to this esteemed position; and
WHEREAS, She is a six-time recipient of the Paul Harris Award, Rota-
ry's highest honor; and
WHEREAS, Active within her community, Ellen Hughes serves on the St.
Mary's Parish Council, is head of the St. Mary's Festival, and is an
advisor to international exchange students; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Ellen Hughes has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Ellen Hughes has displayed through-
out her life; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Jim Hughes, two
grown children, Nicole and Joseph, and one stepdaughter, Tara, as well
as two grandchildren, Alexis and Corinne, all of whom feel privileged to
be a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ellen Hughes upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2013 Citizen of the Year Award by the Seneca County Chamber of
Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ellen Hughes.
