LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Albany Symphony Orchestra on the
occasion of its designation as recipient of a Grammy Award by the
National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with its
time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those illustri-
ous organizations which seek to preserve and celebrate the musical
heritage of our State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in keeping with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Albany Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its designation as recipi-
ent of a Grammy Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences; and
WHEREAS, The Grammy Awards are presented by the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to recognize outstand-
ing achievement in the music industry; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Symphony Orchestra is one of the Capital Region's
most revered music and cultural institutions; it is known for its bril-
liant live performances, adventurous programming, innovative educational
initiatives and engaging cultural events; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Symphony Orchestra's members believe the best
music of our time deserves its place in the center of their repertoire;
their unique mission is to focus on works by great living American
composers that are often overlooked; its musicians believe in giving
voice to beautiful music that would otherwise never be heard by a broad
audience; and
WHEREAS, The Albany Symphony Orchestra was awarded best classical
instrumental solo for its recording of composer John Corigliano's
"Conjurer-Concerto For Percussionist & String Orchestra," on Sunday,
January 25, 2014, at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, "Conjurer," a 36-minute percussion concerto was recorded at
the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and conducted by David Alan Miller with
the talented Dame Evelyn Glemie performing as soloist; the recording is
being released on the Naxos music label; and
WHEREAS, Conductor David Allan Miller has done a superb job in guid-
ing, molding, and inspiring his orchestra of talented musicians to
achieve national recognition and acclaim; and
WHEREAS, This momentous event marks the first Grammy Award won by the
Albany Symphony Orchestra in its 84 year history; it is a validation of
all the dedication and efforts of its members and will no doubt be an
inspiration to even greater heights of glory in the future; and
WHEREAS, Organizations which provide a means of displaying the rich
tapestry of American music and which contribute to the community in such
noble endeavors as aforementioned, are held in the highest regard by
this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Albany Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of its designation
as recipient of a Grammy Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts
and Sciences; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Albany Symphony Orchestra, and Conductor David Allan
Miller.
