LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending John A. Martin, President of Roberts
Wesleyan College and Northeast Seminary, upon the occasion of his
retirement after many years of distinguished service in the field of
Education
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed resi-
dents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
John A. Martin, President of Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeast
Seminary, upon the occasion of his retirement after many years of
distinguished service in the field of Education; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1949, in Oak Park, Illinois, and raised in Wheaton,
Illinois, President John A. Martin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in History from Wheaton College, a Master of Theology and Doctor
of Theology in Old Testament, Hebrew, and Semitic Languages from Dallas
Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education
Administration from the University of North Texas; in addition, he is an
ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, President John A. Martin began his illustrious career at
Roberts Wesleyan College as Provost in 1996, with a wealth of experience
in teaching and academic administration; he later served as the Execu-
tive Vice President of both the College and the newly-formed Northeast-
ern Seminary, responsible for all academic matters, student life issues,
and financial accountability; and
WHEREAS, In October, 2002, he was inaugurated as the 10th President of
Roberts Wesleyan College, and the 2nd President of Northeastern Semi-
nary; and
WHEREAS, As a widely sought guest speaker and consultant, President
John A. Martin has spoken at hundreds of schools, churches and confer-
ences in the United States and around the world, including Canada,
Ghana, Guatemala, India, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Switzerland
and Israel; and
WHEREAS, Author and contributor to five books and numerous scholarly
journal articles, President John A. Martin serves on the Board of Direc-
tors of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities of the
State of New York, and the Board of Commissioners of the Association of
Theological Schools; and
WHEREAS, He is a member of the American Association of Higher Educa-
tion, American Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and
Universities, Association of Free Methodist Educational Institutions,
and Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities; as well as a
devoted member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities,
Council of Independent Colleges, Fellowship of Evangelical Seminary
Presidents, International Organization of Septuagint and Cognate
Studies, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities,
and Society of Biblical Literature; and
WHEREAS, For many years, President John A. Martin rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to Roberts Wesleyan College and
Northeast Seminary; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as President of Roberts Wesleyan College and
Northeast Seminary, John A. Martin served with loyalty, honor and
distinction, earning the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Kathryn, and their
four children, Christopher (April), Cameron (Christa), Colin, and Kyle;
as well as his three grandchildren Shiloh, Jack, and Lily, all of whom
feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate blend-
ing of strength, leadership, and commitment as that demonstrated by
President John A. Martin over a lifetime of sacrifice and dedication to
others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John A. Martin, President of Roberts Wesleyan College and North-
east Seminary, upon the occasion of his retirement after many years of
distinguished service in the field of Education; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to President John A. Martin.
