LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Literacy
Volunteers of Rochester
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to honor those
illustrious institutions of the State of New York whose purposeful
endeavors serve to enhance the quality of life in their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of Literacy Volunteers of Rochester to be
celebrated with a luncheon on Thursday, May 8, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1964 in Auburn, New York, to help combat the prob-
lem of adult illiteracy in Rochester and its surrounding communities,
Literacy Volunteers of Rochester's founding premise is that well-trained
and carefully supported volunteers can be effective tutors of adults and
can make a significant impact on the problem of illiteracy; and
WHEREAS, One of the oldest literacy groups in the country, Literacy
Volunteers of America is a national organization founded in Syracuse;
and
WHEREAS, Literacy Volunteers of Rochester's tutors assist adult lear-
ners in overcoming the barriers of low literacy, enabling them to learn
English as a Second Language, become proficient in basic math skills,
complete a job application, and assist children and grandchildren; its
services help individuals become independent readers, writers, and
speakers of English; and
WHEREAS, Literacy Volunteers of Rochester works to encourage and
assist other organizations and individuals that are committed to a
literate society; by providing effective training and support to volun-
teers, the organization builds skills and abilities which enable its
volunteers to help students acquire basic literacy skills and enhance
their personal growth; and
WHEREAS, As Literacy Volunteers of Rochester looks forward to another
50 years, its members know that its students and tutors are the backbone
of the organization and that it would not be thriving today without the
dedication of its many volunteers, past and present; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to recognize Literacy Volun-
teers of Rochester for its enduring commitment and outstanding contrib-
utions to the quality of life in Rochester and surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, Ably led and generously staffed by dedicated volunteers,
Literacy Volunteers of Rochester will continue to thrive and succeed
today and well into the future; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when the noble
aims and accomplishments of organizations such as Literacy Volunteers of
Rochester are brought to our attention it is appropriate to publicly
proclaim and commend them, and their staff and volunteers, for the
education and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Literacy Volunteers of Rochester;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Literacy Volunteers of Rochester.
