LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Caribbean Research Center at
Medgar Evers College upon the occasion of hosting its 4th Annual Shirley
Chisholm Women's Empowerment Conference on March 21, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College upon the occasion
of hosting its 4th Annual Shirley Chisholm Women's Empowerment Confer-
ence on Saturday, March 21, 2015 in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Caribbean Research Center, established in September, 1985
to address the needs and achievements of the rapidly growing Caribbean
segment of the New York State population, is an integral academic compo-
nent of Medgar Evers College, The City University of New York; and
WHEREAS, Through its research efforts, the Center provides a multidis-
ciplinary understanding of the New York social environment, the diverse
social, cultural and economic characteristics of the Caribbean-American
community and a comparative analysis of the immigration experience of
this community in the context of the wider Caribbean Diasporas in the
Americas and Europe; and
WHEREAS, The theme for this year's conference is "Preserving the Black
Family of New York City", and will focus on community concerns centered
on health and mental hygiene, education and financial disparities; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Dr. Una Clarke, Advisory Board
Chairperson of the Caribbean Research Center, this auspicious event will
be used as a platform to highlight the status and aspirations of women
of African descent in Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Caribbean Research
Center at Medgar Evers College; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers
College is in direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the commu-
nity it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be recognized and applauded by all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College upon the
occasion of hosting its 4th Annual Shirley Chisholm Women's Empowerment
Conference on March 21, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College, Brook-
lyn, New York.
