LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the
passage of President Lincoln's Funeral Train through the Hudson Valley
to Albany, New York, in 1865

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate those
events of historical significance which add strength, vigor and inspira-
tion to the cultural diversity and quality of life in the communities of
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate the
150th Anniversary of the passage of President Lincoln's Funeral Train
through the Hudson Valley to Albany, New York, in 1865, to be feted with
events, such as a film screening, lectures and exhibits, in both Stuy-
vesant and Hudson, New York; and
WHEREAS, The 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was
shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Wash-
ington, D.C.; he succumbed to his injuries and died the following morn-
ing; and
WHEREAS, A funeral train carrying President Lincoln's body, made the
somber journey to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois; the train trav-
eled from Washington, D.C. through Baltimore, Maryland, up to Philadelp-
hia, Pennsylvania, and eventually came through the Hudson Valley on its
way up to Albany; and
WHEREAS, President Lincoln's last train ride gave the people of this
great Nation the opportunity to mourn and reflect on the life and lead-
ership of this extraordinary man; and
WHEREAS, President Lincoln's Funeral Train stopped in Hudson, New
York, at about 9:30 p.m. for a few minutes on April 25, 1865, and then
made its way up to Stuyvesant; and
WHEREAS, Festivities memorializing this momentous occasion will begin
with a lecture portraying President Abraham Lincoln as a complex histor-
ical figure; and
WHEREAS, In addition, numerous events will take place April 24-26,
2015, including an exhibit entitled "Lincoln's Long Journey Home", host-
ed by the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revo-
lution; re-enactors will portray Mary Todd Lincoln, abolitionist Solomon
Northtup, and a Civil War Surgeon, and readings will be recited from
both the diary of Elizabeth Miller, a woman who personally mourned the
death of President Abraham Lincoln in Albany in 1865, and from a
collection of Walt Whitman's Civil War poetry; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those organizations and individuals which seek to bring
recognition to historical events within the State of New York, and in
doing so, help to ensure that the complete history of our State and
Nation is preserved and shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for President Abraham Lincoln, and for
the members of both the Stuyvesant and Hudson Train Committee who have
worked to bring proper attention to an event and time which merits
recognition in the grand panorama of the history of our State and
Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the passage of President Lincoln's
Funeral Train through the Hudson Valley to Albany, New York, in 1865;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Chairs of the Stuyvesant Train Committee, Songayllo and Rich-
ard Anderson and Chair of the Hudson Train Committee, Gene Shetsky.
