LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Ulysses deArmas upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Libby Post Council Leadership Award by
the Pride Center of the Capital Reason
WHEREAS, From time to time, this Legislative Body takes note of certain
individuals that it wishes to recognize for having given of their time
and energies to serve the best interests of their communities and to
publicly acknowledge their service; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ulysses deArmas upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Libby Post Council Leadership Award by the Pride Center of the Capital
Region which was celebrated at the Center's Annual Gala on Friday, Octo-
ber 24, 2014, at the Hilton Albany in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Pride Center of the Capital Region is dedicated to serv-
ing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the
Albany area, and has been meeting the diverse needs of the LGBT popu-
lation since 1970; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Pride Center holds a Gala to raise needed
funds for the Center's fundamental programs and services, including its
youth and senior programs; and
WHEREAS, Ulysses deArmas graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1983, and
earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from St. John's University in
1988; in addition, he participated in graduate studies in religious
education at Fordham University; and
WHEREAS, For 21 years, this esteemed man was a member of the Catholic
religious order, the Brothers of the Christian Schools, where he held a
number of different roles, including teacher, campus minister, coach,
social worker, and administrator; he also worked in four different high
schools including Christian Brothers Academy and LaSalle School, both in
Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Ulysses deArmas began his current position as Associate
Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
(RPI) in August of 2006; he serves as a panelist for safe zone training
sessions on campus, and as a mentor to undergraduate students who are a
part of the LGBT Mentorship Program at RPI; and
WHEREAS, Ulysses deArmas was an active member and sometime facilitator
of the Gay Mens Peer Support Group at the Pride Center; through his
involvement in the group, he went on to volunteer to chair the Events
Committee for Capital Pride for five years; and
WHEREAS, Ulysses deArmas has also served the LGBT community as a faci-
litator for the Pride Center's Youth Group, and has been co-host of the
popular radio show, HomoRadio, for the past seven years, which he
continues to co-host; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Ulysses deArmas has served as a member of the
Board of Directors of the Pride Center for six years, and has also
served as Chair of the Pride Center's Scholarship Committee for three
years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Ulysses deArmas has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Ulysses deArmas has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ulysses deArmas upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Libby Post Council Leadership Award by the Pride Center of the
Capital Region; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ulysses deArmas.
