LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Giacomo Mondo upon the occasion of
celebrating his 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Giacomo Mondo was born the youngest son of eight children to
Italian immigrants Francis and Clara Mondo on July 4, 1915, in Brooklyn,
New York; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with his zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, In 1938, Giacomo Mondo, affectionately known to his family as
"Pop", married Anna Brillante, also from Brooklyn, and together they
raised three children, twin girls, Marie and Clara, and a son, Francis;
today, he is the proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and 12 great-
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Giacomo "Pop" Mondo honorably served in the United States
Army from 1945 to 1946 in Germany during the Second World War as a tank
mechanic in Delta Company, 25th Tank Battalion, 14th Armored Division;
and
WHEREAS, Upon completing his tour of duty, Giacomo "Pop" Mondo
returned to his family in New York and lived in Military Family Housing
in Rego Park, Queens before settling down in Mineola where he worked as
a truck driver for the Nabisco Company for more than 30 years; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, After his retirement in 1978, Giacomo "Pop" Mondo and Anna
moved to White River Junction, Vermont where they resided for 11 years;
in 1989, they returned to New York and settled in the community of Ridge
in Suffolk County where he continues to reside today; and
WHEREAS, Giacomo "Pop" Mondo has always put his family and community
ahead of himself; he ministered to the American Legion Post No. 1880 as
the Post Chaplain for more than 20 years and was recently recognized by
the Post Commander for his outstanding dedication and service; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed man faithfully served both his
Vermont and New York communities for more than 30 years as a Fourth
Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and most recently as a Euchar-
istic Minister at the Parish of Saint Anthony of Padua in Rocky Point;
and
WHEREAS, An avid New York Yankees fan, Giacomo "Pop" Mondo has been
witness to all 40 of their American League pennants and 27 World Champi-
onships from 1921 to 2009; and
WHEREAS, This beloved man has enriched the lives of those around him
through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Giacomo Mondo upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Giacomo Mondo.
