LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring David C. Shea for 40 years of distin-
guished service to his community as a sports writer and photographer
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
serve to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
David C. Shea for 40 years of distinguished service to his community as
a sports writer and photographer; and
WHEREAS, For 40 years, David C. "Doc" Shea has served the families of
Northern New York, bringing the best coverage of local sports to the
pages of Northern New York's newspapers, and earning the respect and
admiration of those whose lives he has written about throughout his
career; and
WHEREAS, David Shea began his professional career in 1972 after his
graduation from St. Lawrence University, as a sports writer and photog-
rapher for the OGDENSBURG JOURNAL and the ADVANCE NEWS; and
WHEREAS, He became the newspaper's sports editor and was instrumental
in providing equal coverage to men's and women's sports at both the high
school and college levels, expanding public awareness, acceptance and
support for women's athletics; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his role as a sports writer, David Shea played
a critical role in promoting and expanding athletic opportunities and
outdoor activities of people of all ages, promoting hunting, fishing,
car racing, boat racing, little leagues, adult leagues, and a host of
activities ranging from canoeing and darts to horseshoes and pool; and
WHEREAS, During his four decades as a sports writer, David Shea has
become a role model for other sports writers and journalists across the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, He has received awards and accolades from local schools,
regional and state athletic associations, coaches, and halls of fame for
his selfless efforts to spotlight the achievement of students and adult
athletes; and
WHEREAS, Among those awards, David Shea was named Ogdensburg's 2012
Citizen of the Year, and had the distinction of having the Ogdensburg
City School District name its new press box in his honor; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend David C. Shea for 40 years of distinguished service to his
community as a sports writer and photographer; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David C. Shea.
