LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Honorable Florence Monwe upon the
occasion of her designation as recipient of the prestigious Mother's Day
Award by the National Action Network and Gateway Christian Center
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals within the State of New York who give of
their time and energies in support of spiritual endeavors which aim to
benefit the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Honorable Florence Monwe upon the occasion of her designation as recipi-
ent of the prestigious Mother's Day Award by the National Action Network
and Gateway Christian Center, to be celebrated at its Government Gala
Awards Ceremony, on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Jericho Terrace, Mineola,
New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious award is given to women who have demonstrated
exemplary works, services, and commitment to the people of their commu-
nity; Honorable Florence Monwe truly deserves this honor for her
contributions to society; and
WHEREAS, Florence Monwe was one of seven children born to Chief Benja-
min and Mrs. Felicia Emebo, both of whom are still living; it was impor-
tant to her parents that their children earned college degrees, which
would allow them to be successful in life; and
WHEREAS, Florence Monwe attended an all-girls high school in Oba,
Nigeria; upon graduation, she studied law at the University of Nigeria,
graduating in June of 1987; one year later, she passed the Nigerian Bar
examination, and became a member of the Nigerian Bar Association in
February of 1989; and
WHEREAS, Florence Monwe also attended the institute of Management and
Technology in Enugu-Nigeria, where she obtained a Higher National Diplo-
ma in Business Administration and Management; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1991, Florence Monwe migrated to the United States
and met her future husband, Lawrence Monwe; she was employed as a Case-
worker with New York City, working with the Foster Care Department of
New York City Administration for Children Services (ACS); and
WHEREAS, Florence Monwe took the New York State Bar Examination, and
was called to the New York Bar Association in 1999; she volunteered her
services working Pro Bono for the New York State Legal Aid Society in
Queens, New York, from 1999-2000; and
WHEREAS, On July 27, 2000, Florence Monwe held the esteemed position
of Administrative Law Judge for Child Abuse at the New York State Office
of Children and Family Services; a title she still holds today; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Lawrence (Larry)
Monwe, and her three sons, Raluchukwu, Jachike, and Chukwuemeka, all of
whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her
achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Honorable Florence Monwe upon the occasion of her designation as
recipient of the prestigious Mother's Day Award by the National Action
Network and Gateway Christian Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Honorable Florence Monwe, the National Action Network, and
the Gateway Christian Center.
