LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther
King Commission upon the occasion of celebrating its 30th Anniversary on
April 17, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission upon the occasion of
celebrating its 30th Anniversary on Friday, April 17, 2015, at TWU Local
100 Headquarters, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission was estab-
lished in 1985 to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
and to acknowledge his basic principles through the development of
appropriate programs and activities which recognize his philosophy of
human understanding, racial harmony, social and economic justice through
non-violent means; and
WHEREAS, Providing a forum for discussion and resolution of problems
concerning educational, economic and social issues impacting community
life, the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission educates local
communities on the significance of Dr. King's movement to secure human
and civil rights through his philosophy of non-violent social change and
the relevancy of his teachings to society's current problems; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this vital organization promotes racial harmony
and social justice through the application of Dr. King's methodology of
empowerment, wherein local communities are encouraged to identify,
develop and implement programs that foster grassroots economic develop-
ment and alleviate unemployment, poverty, racism and violence; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception, this volunteer-led and operated Commis-
sion has operated an annual essay, poetry and art contest for Brooklyn's
elementary, middle and high school students focused on the life and work
of Dr. King and its relevance to today's world; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King
Commission is in direct correlation to the efforts of its members, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the commu-
nity it serves; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Central Brooklyn
Martin Luther King Commission; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission upon the
occasion of celebrating its 30th Anniversary on April 17, 2015; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Central Brooklyn Martin Luther King Commission.
