LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Jay P. Goldman upon the occasion of
his designation as a 2015 Inductee into the Auburn Alumni Hall of
Distinction, on May 15, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Jay P. Goldman upon the occasion of his designation as a 2015 Inductee
into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction, to be celebrated at an
Induction Ceremony on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Hilton Garden Inn,
Auburn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction was established in
2012, by the Auburn Education Foundation to recognize, honor and cele-
brate graduates who have distinguished themselves through outstanding
academic, professional, or civic achievements and to inspire current
students to pursue a path towards personal success; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular merit, Jay P. Goldman, Auburn High Class of
1974, has continually demonstrated tremendous competence, extraordinary
intelligence and diligent leadership in his unwavering service to both
his community and his profession and consequently has been selected for
this most prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, A native of Auburn, Jay P. Goldman graduated from Auburn High
School in 1974; while a student, he enrolled in an elective journalism
course and joined the staff of THE OUTLET, the student newspaper; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduating, Jay P. Goldman earned his bachelor's degree
at Haverford College, Haverford, Pennsylvania, and then went on to
obtain his Master's degree in Print Journalism at Syracuse University's
S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications; and
WHEREAS, Jay P. Goldman's professional career began as a high school
junior when he was hired by the CITIZEN-ADVERTISER to cover after-school
varsity and junior varsity sporting events; in addition, he held the
position of Program Manager for a weekly Saturday afternoon student-run
radio broadcast on WAUB, an AM station in Auburn; and
WHEREAS, After college, Jay P. Goldman was employed at the SYRACUSE
HERALD-JOURNAL for almost 10 years, mostly covering educational issues;
during this time, he started the newspaper's Minority Journalist Program
with the Syracuse City School District, and served as co-Advisor of the
newspaper's Journalism Explorer Post; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure at the SYRACUSE HERALD-JOURNAL, Jay P.
Goldman was the recipient of numerous education reporting awards from
the Associated Press, New York State United Teachers and the New York
State School Boards Association; and
WHEREAS, Since 1989, Jay P. Goldman has worked for the SCHOOL ADMINIS-
TRATOR, a monthly magazine covering education issues for school super-
intendents across the country, published by the American Association of
School Administrators; since 1992, he has held the esteemed position of
Editor; and
WHEREAS, As Editor, Jay P. Goldman received several accolades from the
Association of Media and Publications, TASH, and the National School
Public Relations Association; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Jay P. Goldman is an Adjunct Professor at the
University of Maryland's Merrill College of Journalism, College Park,
Maryland, and served as a visiting Professor of Journalism at Miami
University, Oxford, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Rebecca Salon, and
his two children, Abby and Seth, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Jay P. Goldman upon the occasion of his designation as a 2015
Inductee into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction, on May 15, 2015;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jay P. Goldman.
