LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Tanya Owens upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2015 Third Age Achievement Award in
Health and Human Services by Senior Services of Albany
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Tanya Owens
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2015 Third Age
Achievement Award in Health and Human Services by Senior Services of
Albany, to be celebrated at its 19th Annual Third Age Achievement Awards
Luncheon on Friday, May 8, 2015, at Wolfert's Roost Country Club, Alba-
ny, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious event recognizes the contributions
that area residents and professionals have made in their communities
during the Third Age of their lives; Tanya Owens will receive this award
for her valuable achievements and devoted service to her community after
the age of 60; and
WHEREAS, Originally from Sharpsberg, North Carolina, Tanya Owens has
spent the last 40 years in the Capital Region; and
WHEREAS, Upon her retirement, Tanya Owens accepted a short term-part
time job with Trinity Alliance as Financial Literacy Coordinator, a
position she has held for over nine years; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure with Trinity Alliance, Tanya Owens has
coordinated the Vita Tax program, which prepares more than 350 tax
returns for residents of the South End of the City of Albany, as well as
residents of Arbor Hill; in addition to preparing taxes each year, she
selflessly gives her time and energies to teaching Budgeting Classes and
Parenting Classes at Trinity Alliance for the benefit of local resi-
dents; and
WHEREAS, Tanya Owens's commitment to enriching the lives of others can
also be measured by her philanthropic volunteerism; over 40 years ago,
she began her volunteer service with the Black Women's Association of
Albany in an effort to meet new people; throughout this experience, she
was instrumental in helping make new friends, and gaining the valuable
confidence and leadership abilities which has allowed her to continue to
pursue her life-long enjoyment of helping others; and
WHEREAS, Tanya Owens has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; currently, she is a member of the Albany Equity
Committee, CASH Coalition of the United Way, and a Board of Directors
member for Black Dimensions in Art, Inc., as well as The Baby Institute
of Albany; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Tanya Owens has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband of 46 years, Leroy
Owens, and their two children, Sherrod and Tish, as well as a grandson,
Chase, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice
in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Individuals and organizations devoted to improving the quali-
ty of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity and self-
worth are deserving of the highest praise and recognition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Tanya Owens upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2015 Third Age Achievement Award in Health and Human Services by
Senior Services of Albany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Tanya Owens.
