LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Henry J. Steadman upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the 2015 Third Age Achievement Award
in Health and Human Services by Senior Services of Albany
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality of life in the communities across this great State of New York
is enriched by the diligence and compassionate commitment of those indi-
viduals whose singular purpose is the care and welfare of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Henry J.
Steadman upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2015
Third Age Achievement Award in Health and Human Services by Senior
Services of Albany, to be celebrated at its 19th Annual Third Age
Achievement Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 8, 2015, at Wolfert's Roost
Country Club, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious event recognizes the contributions
that area residents and professionals have made in their communities
during the Third Age of their lives; Dr. Henry J. Steadman will receive
this award for his valuable achievements and devoted healthcare service
to his community after the age of 60; and
WHEREAS, A highly respected individual in the field of sociology, Dr.
Henry J. Steadman holds both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of
Arts degree in Sociology from Boston College, as well as a PhD in Soci-
ology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and
WHEREAS, Since 1987, Dr. Henry J. Steadman has been the
Founder/President of Policy Research Associates; its mission is to
create positive social changes for individuals who are disadvantaged
through technical assistance, research, and training; and
WHEREAS, Prior to establishing Policy Research Associates, Dr. Henry
J. Steadman ran the research bureau for the New York State Office of
Mental Health for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Henry J. Steadman devotes his time and energies on the
lines crossing mental health, behavioral health, and legal issues; his
primary work focuses on risk assessment, the movement of populations
between corrections and mental health post deinstitutionalization, and
the sequential intercept model of diversion options for the mentally ill
incarcerated populations; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Henry J. Steadman has been called upon to contribute his
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of himself unstintingly; currently, he is involved with the
SAMHSA'S GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation,
the Service Members, Veterans and their Families Technical Assistance
Center, the NIJ Juvenile Mental Health Court Study, and maximizing the
impact of the Langeloth Foundation's Behavioral Health and Justice Port-
folio; and
WHEREAS, A man of many accomplishments, Dr. Henry J. Steadman has
received numerous awards and accolades recognizing his outstanding work
including the Distinguished Public Service Award by the School of Crimi-
nal Justice at the University of Albany, Distinguished Career Award for
the Practice of Sociology by the American Sociology Association, William
Foote Whyte Distinguished Career Award by the American Sociological
Association Section on Sociological Practice and Public Sociology, and
the Distinguished Service Award by the National Alliance on Mental
Illness; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Henry J. Steadman is the author of eight
books, over 150 journal articles, 20 chapters for other individuals'
publications, and numerous renowned reports; and
WHEREAS, In his spare time, Dr. Henry J. Steadman enjoys golfing,
hiking, biking, and running; be also boasts having completed 14 mara-
thons; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
outstanding individuals within the State of New York whose achievements
in the field of mental health serve as an inspiration to all; and
WHEREAS, Individuals and organizations which bring greater awareness
to mental health issues, and assist people with mental illnesses in
their quest for dignity and independence, are a great benefit to the
health and welfare of all citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Henry J. Steadman upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the 2015 Third Age Achievement Award in Health and Human
Services by Senior Services of Albany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Henry J. Steadman.
