LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Dr. and Mrs. Douglas M. Sanford
upon the occasion of celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary
WHEREAS, Douglas M. Sanford and Mary R. Peyton were united in marriage
on June 12, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Charlestown, Indiana with
the Reverend Staten Lightfoot officiating; and
WHEREAS, They are the proud parents of four children and the loving
grandparents of fifteen grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Sanford are and always have been a tower of
strength, support, understanding and limitless love for their family;
and
WHEREAS, Their love, devotion, caring, sensitivity and responsiveness
to their family, friends and all who know them are their hallmark and
tradition; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Douglas M. Sanford graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy
in 1949; he continued his education at the University of Louisville
where he earned a degree in zoology in 1953, as well as a medical
doctorate in 1957; and
WHEREAS, After receiving his board certification in 1964, Dr. Douglas
M. Sanford successfully maintained a private practice in Watertown, New
York from 1967 to 2001; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Douglas M. Sanford served on the medical and
surgical staffs of the former Mercy Hospital and the House of the Good
Samaritan Hospital (now Samaritan Medical Center), as well as a five-
year term on the House of the Good Samaritan's Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, President of the Samaritan medical staff from 1980 to 1981,
Dr. Douglas M. Sanford was the Chairman of the Ear, Nose and Throat
Department for many years; and
WHEREAS, Active within the community he so ably serves, Dr. Douglas M.
Sanford is a member of the Ives Hill Country Club, a former Eagle Scout
and a Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor, as well as a member of the
Jefferson County Historical Society and the Northern Choral Society; and
WHEREAS, Mary R. Sanford graduated from Jefferson Indiana High School
in 1950, and Norton Infirmary School of Nursing in 1953; in addition to
being a homemaker, she practiced as a Registered Nurse at Norton Memori-
al Infirmary, Louisville Veterans Administration Hospital and Upstate
Medical University in Syracuse; and
WHEREAS, Mary R. Sanford has been a steadfast community volunteer for
several organizations, some of which include, the Thousand Island Girl
Scout Council, Watertown Morning Musicales, House of the Good Samaritan
Auxiliary Watertown Lyric Theater, Ives Hill Country Club and the
Jefferson County Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, An active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mary R.
Sanford was a member of the Presbyterian Women Board of Directors where
she served as a moderator and treasurer; she received the esteemed Isra-
el A. Shapiro Award in 1994, in recognition of her countless years of
community and volunteer service; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Douglas M. Sanford have lived and continue to
live their lives with great dignity and genuine grace, always demon-
strating a deep and continuing concern for human values and ideals, and
in so doing, they have inspired others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, This meaningful occasion is the result of the love, hard work
and spirit that this couple has invested in their marriage; and
WHEREAS, These same values they have passed to their loved ones,
producing a family that is close-knit and supportive of its individual
members, public-minded in its relations to the community and committed
to the ideals of citizenship upon which this Nation was founded; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Douglas M. Sanford have touched the lives of
their family and many friends through the shining example of their
marriage, which is a testament to the devotion and admiration which they
possess for one another; and
WHEREAS, The longevity of this enduring marriage truly marks a mile-
stone in life's journey, an event of personal triumph and joy; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an occa-
sion of such importance is brought to our attention, the same should be
memorialized by us for the edification and emulation of others; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Dr. and Mrs. Douglas M. Sanford upon the occasion of cele-
brating their 60th Wedding Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. and Mrs. Douglas M. Sanford.
