LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 148th Kings County Memorial Day
Parade on May 25, 2015, and honoring Howie Dunn upon the occasion of his
designation as the Grand Marshal of the Parade
WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders resonates with the rich and noble history of New York State and
this nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend events which symbolize the historical, social and cultural
development of this great State and embody the spirit of the principles
upon which this nation was founded, and to applaud individuals who have
dedicated their life's work in support and furtherance of those princi-
ples; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 148th Kings County Memorial Day Parade on May 25, 2015, and to
honor Howie Dunn upon the occasion of his designation as the Grand
Marshal of the Parade; and
WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of the
month of May, we honor those Americans who gave their lives in defense
of their country, whether in the Civil War which divided our nation or
in times of war since that time, and in times of peace, in police
actions and minor skirmishes, in peacekeeping roles and in missions to
foreign lands to uphold the cherished principles of liberty and democra-
cy upon which our grand Republic was founded; and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Grand Marshal of the Kings County Memo-
rial Day Parade, Howie Dunn proudly served his country as a member of
the United States Navy, retiring as a Yeoman Petty Officer 3rd Class;
and
WHEREAS, Howie Dunn has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America
since 1939, when he joined Troop 321 at St. John's Evangelist Church;
throughout the years he worked his way up to Scoutmaster and then Neigh-
borhood Commissioner, eventually holding the title of Assistant District
Commissioner of the Atlantic District with responsibility for 20 Troops
and Packs; currently, he is an active member of the Boy Scouts' Board of
Directors; and
WHEREAS, Introduced to the Wounded Warrior Project through his
involvement with the Boy Scouts, Howie Dunn helped raise significant
funds for this worthy cause between 2009-2012; his participation with
this vital organization continues today, as he works with Walter Reed
Hospital on numerous clothing drives and conducts tours of New York City
for soldiers and their families; and
WHEREAS, Howie Dunn has been active in numerous civic and charitable
organizations including serving as a member of the Amity 791 American
Flag Committee, placing American flags in front of numerous businesses
throughout Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man has received several awards and accolades
for his service to his community including the Patriotism Award from the
Kings County Memorial Day Committee, the George V. Russano Award from
the Cadet Baseball Club, and the Spark Flag Award by the Atlantic
District Boy Scout Committee; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 67 years, Mae Dunn,
their daughter, Geraldine, and his late son, Edward, and four grandchil-
dren, as well as two great-grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to
be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, As we observe and remember our deceased veterans on Memorial
Day, we recall their brave and noble deeds which have served to maintain
our most precious and cherished freedoms and honor those who continue to
work diligently to support and sustain them; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 148th Kings County Memorial Day Parade on May 25, 2015,
and to honor Howie Dunn upon the occasion of his designation as the
Grand Marshal of the Parade; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Howie Dunn and the Kings County Memorial Day Parade Commit-
tee.
