LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the Centennial Anniversary of
Public School No. 48, The Mapleton School, in Brooklyn, New York, on
June 19, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of the Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commemorate the Centennial
Anniversary of Public School No. 48, The Mapleton School, in Brooklyn,
New York, to be celebrated at a Gala, on Friday, June 19, 2015, at Rex
Manor Catering Hall, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious event will enable the Public School (P.S.) 48
community to reflect on the founding philosophy and principles of the
school which develops, in a collaborative fashion, an instructional
program which will allow all students to achieve high standards of
academic achievement by developing a partnership with parents, resulting
in a program which educates students to think critically, communicate
effectively, meet challenging high standards of excellence, possess
positive self-esteem and contribute to their school, their community,
and the world in which they live; and
WHEREAS, P.S. No. 48, an elementary school located in the Bensonhurst
section of Brooklyn, opened its doors to students in 1915; today, the
school population of 640 students, includes students who speak English,
Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Haitian, French, Kore-
an, Punjabi, Polish and Albanian; and
WHEREAS, P.S. 48 proudly offers its students a rigorous, engaging, and
coherent curriculum that includes the arts, physical and health educa-
tion, science, writing, multicultural reading, mythology, astronomy,
music, library media, author studies, literary publishing, and computer
skills; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated teachers at P.S. 48 create and deliver teaching
practices from units of study aligned to the Common Core Standards, in
accordance with the school beliefs requiring students to engage in high-
er order thinking that results in increased levels of achievement; and
WHEREAS, The students of P.S. 48 write and design their own books for
the Student Treasures program; they then make and read the books to
their parents on a sunny day in the schoolyard in June of each year; and
WHEREAS, Members of the P.S. 48 Players and Band present performances
at their winter and spring concerts and participate in annual Columbus
Day Parades; and
WHEREAS, Realizing that learning is more than just studying, the
students of P.S. 48 are part of the Respect for All Initiative; the
school holds monthly Have a Heart programs where students talk about all
the good deeds they do for their classmates and teachers; in addition,
at these assemblies, the students celebrate the holidays in both New
York City and the Nation, such as Brotherhood Month, Black History,
Women's History, Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving, and the holidays in the
winter and spring months; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the well-being of their Brooklyn community, both
students and teachers are actively involved in various fundraising
activities, such as the Relay for Life program, and cancer research; and
WHEREAS, These remarkable individuals collect money through the Penny
Harvest Program to assist needy families in their neighborhoods, and
take part in a food drive during Thanksgiving, donating the goods to the
Reaching Out organization; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Principal Diane J. Picucci,
P.S. 48 stands prepared to reach out, in earnest and enthusiastic quest
of its mission, to promote the maximum growth of every student, estab-
lishing standards and building skills which will carry its students and
the citizens of its community into the future; and
WHEREAS, P.S. No. 48 is proudly aware of its distinguished past, eager
to fulfill its commitment to parents, students and community, and plan-
ning with vision and purpose for the ebb and swell of growth and change
it will encounter in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Centennial Anniversary of Public School No. 48, The
Mapleton School, in Brooklyn, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Diane J. Picucci, Principal, Public School No. 48, The Maple-
ton School, Brooklyn, New York.
