LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Jay Sullivan upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the Sisters of Mercy on May 19,
2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those individ-
uals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Jay Sullivan upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion by the Sisters of Mercy to be celebrated at its 16th Annual Evening
of Mercy Gala on May 19, 2015, at The Yale Club of New York City; and
WHEREAS, The Sisters of Mercy work passionately to eliminate poverty,
the widespread denial of human rights, the degradation of earth, the
increase in violence and racism, the continued oppression of women, the
abuse of children, the mistreatment of immigrants and the lack of soli-
darity among people and nations; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, Jay Sullivan earned his Bachelor's degree in English
from Boston College; after graduating, he was employed at the Boston
College International Volunteer Program teaching English language,
composition and public speaking; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Jay Sullivan wrote a book about that experience,
RAISING GENTLE MEN: LIVES AT THE ORPHANAGE EDGE, which was published in
2013; and
WHEREAS, Jay Sullivan received his Juris Doctor from Fordham Universi-
ty School of Law, New York City, in 1989; that year, he was named among
the first class of Skadden Fellows by the Skadden Foundation; and
WHEREAS, As a Skadden Fellow, Jay Sullivan acted as in-house legal
counsel at Covenant House, a crisis shelter for runaway and homeless
teenagers; following his Fellowship, he spent seven years practicing
insurance law on behalf of Lloyds of London; and
WHEREAS, Today, Jay Sullivan is the Managing Partner at Exec-Comm and
leads the firm's Law Firm Group; whether working with groups or in one-
on-one coaching arrangements, he helps professionals by teaching them to
focus on the needs of their audiences; and
WHEREAS, Jay Sullivan was also a featured columnist for the NEW YORK
LAW JOURNAL, where his column, "The Art of Communication" appeared regu-
larly; as a freelance writer, he has been published in READERS DIGEST,
CATHOLIC DIGEST, PARENTS MAGAZINE, THE GOLFER, and THE NEW YORK TIMES;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Jay Sullivan upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Sisters of Mercy on May 19, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jay Sullivan.
