LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the South High School Protein Modeling
Team upon the occasion of winning First and Second place at the 2015
Protein Modeling Challenge
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those who, by achieving outstanding success in their educa-
tional and scientific endeavors, have inspired and brought pride to our
majestic Empire State; and
WHEREAS, It is also the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize
the dedication and commitment of our young people who distinguish them-
selves through excellence in science competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
South High School Protein Modeling Team upon the occasion of winning
First and Second place at the 2015 Protein Modeling Challenge; and
WHEREAS, The 2015 Protein Modeling Challenge is an event hosted by the
Stony Brook University Center for Science and Mathematics in which teams
of students compete to build models illustrating the link between prote-
in structure and function; and
WHEREAS, Students are responsible for studying a specific protein
chosen from an academic paper and collecting background information;
they next demonstrate their creativity and understanding by building a
model and writing an essay; finally, on the day of the competition, the
teams build another model and complete a short exam to demonstrate their
mastery of the material; and
WHEREAS, The South High School Protein Modeling Team used their
outstanding building skills and knowledge of biochemistry, biology, and
physiology to build a model of a Ras protein which won both First and
Second place at the competition; and
WHEREAS, The 2015 Protein Modeling Challenge first place winners
include: Joohee Gha, Ethan Schonhaut, and Wenzhen Zhao; the second
place winners include: Angela Chi, James Liu, and Helena Woroniecka; and
WHEREAS, Dr. James Truglio, faculty advisor and science research
teacher, guided his team with exemplary wisdom, ingenuity, courage and
knowledge and should be commended for his dedication to the development
of his school's protein modeling team program; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to celebrate the educational and scientific
accomplishments of remarkable schools such as South High School, and its
students and teachers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the South High School Protein Modeling Team upon the occasion of
winning first and second place at the 2015 Protein Modeling Challenge;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the South High School Protein Modeling Team; its members:
Joohee Gha, Ethan Schonhaut, Wenzhen Zhao, Angela Chi, James Liu, and
Helena Woroniecka; and Faculty Advisor Dr. James Truglio upon the occa-
sion of winning both First and Second place at the 2015 Protein Modeling
Challenge.
