LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Dr. Hobart Lerner upon the occa-
sion of his retirement after serving more than 65 distinguished years as
a prominent Ophthalmologist in Rochester, New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed resi-
dents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Dr. Hobart Lerner upon the occasion of his retirement after more
than 65 distinguished years as a prominent Ophthalmologist in Rochester,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hobart Lerner was born in 1919; he majored in American
History before going into medicine; he emulated his father, Dr. Macy
Lerner, and joined his Ophthalmologist practice on July 1, 1949; over 65
years later he officially retired on December 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his trailblazing career, Dr. Hobart Lerner served
his beloved community of Rochester, New York, with intelligence and
caring dedication, continuously striving to effectively fulfill the
duties of his position as a medical professional; and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with whom
Dr. Hobart Lerner worked, he will be remembered for his honesty, integ-
rity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of human
problems in his official acts; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hobart Lerner loved to take care of his patients, espe-
cially those who were in need; he volunteered in many different clinics,
and with children who were disabled; he was known as an advocate for
patients; and
WHEREAS, In 1999, the New York State Ophthalmological Society named
the celebrated Hobie Award after Dr. Hobart Lerner; this esteemed acco-
lade is bestowed upon a member who demonstrates outstanding commitment
to his patients, community or profession; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hobart Lerner was profiled in a series of DEMOCRAT AND
CHRONICLE stories marking his 80th, 85th, and 90th birthdays; he was
also recognized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as the oldest
practitioner in the country; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his loving wife of 50 years,
Elinor, who feels privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in
his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hobart Lerner has distinguished himself in his career and
community involvement, and the citizens of Rochester have profited
greatly from his dedication and service; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Dr. Hobart Lerner upon his outstanding career of magnif-
icent achievements, and to wish him a rewarding and well-earned retire-
ment; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Hobart Lerner.
