LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Town of Camillus, New York, upon
the occasion of hosting its Re-Dedication and Wreath Laying Ceremony at
Veterans Park at Gillie Lake on May 23, 2015
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend events which symbolize the historical, social and cultural
development of this great State and embody the spirit of the principles
upon which this Nation was founded; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Town of Camillus, New York, upon the occasion of hosting its Re-Ded-
ication and Wreath Laying Ceremony at Veterans Park at Gillie Lake on
Saturday, May 23, 2015; and
WHEREAS, At this year's fine event, the Town of Camillus will be cele-
brating the addition of two ceremonial cannons at Gillie Lake Veterans
Memorial Park, which were built and donated by Mark Eckert; and
WHEREAS, New York was the first state to formally recognize Memorial
Day, then known as Decoration Day, as a holiday to honor our fallen
veterans; Memorial Day is not a celebration, but rather a day of taking
time out for remembrance, as characterized by our ancestors who observed
the day by taking time out to remember family members and neighbors who
lost their lives in the Civil War that divided our nation; and
WHEREAS, Veterans Park at Gillie Lake is a 94 acre parcel of land with
a seven acre spring-fed lake; it has often been described as the gem of
the West Hill of Camillus; and
WHEREAS, Originally under private ownership, this renowned recreation-
al area was donated to the public, and renamed Veterans Memorial Park at
Gillie Lake in 1996; and
WHEREAS, One of the most popular summer destinations in the Camillus
community, Veterans Park at Gillie Lake plays host to numerous special
events, including the annual 4th of July Celebration; and
WHEREAS, Today, Veterans Park at Gillie Lake consists of the veterans
memorial monuments, a renovated one room schoolhouse, a playground and
beach, as well as open air pavilions and numerous picnic areas; and
WHEREAS, As we remember our deceased veterans, we also recall their
brave and noble deeds, that in the more than 200 years of our country's
existence, have served to maintain our most precious freedoms; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Town of Camillus, New York, upon the occasion of hosting its
Re-Dedication and Wreath Laying Ceremony at Veterans Park at Gillie Lake
on May 23, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Camillus, New York.
