LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Essex
Street Market in Manhattan's Lower East Side

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those businesses which substantially contribute to the
economic vitality of their communities and the entire Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 75th Anniversary of the Essex Street Market in Manhattan's
Lower East Side; and closure, inspiring growth, resurgence and vitality;
and
WHEREAS, This month, the Essex Street Market celebrates its 75th Anni-
versary with a series of neighborhood fairs, exhibits, poetry, and talks
that reflect the diverse and exciting nature of its home on the Lower
East Side; and
WHEREAS, Essex Street Market was established in 1940 by former Mayor
Fiorello H. LaGuardia to help the congestion of pushcarts and vendors on
city streets; and
WHEREAS, The market was shaped in its earliest years by the Lower East
Side's vibrant immigrant community, which transformed the market from a
place to shop to a social destination; and
WHEREAS, The market came under the control of the New York City
Economic Development Corporation, which invested in renovations to try
to restore the market to its former glory; and
WHEREAS, Thanks to the enterprising and industrious nature of the
Essex Street Market vendors, and support from the City and customers who
sought the personalized service provided by the vendors, the market
forged on towards revitalization; and
WHEREAS, The Essex Street Market has served multiple generations of
not only Lower East Siders, but generations of New Yorkers across the
five boroughs who express their loyalty to the market by continuing to
support the diverse and dedicated vendors; and
WHEREAS, Centrally located on the Lower East Side, on two of the
neighborhood's main thoroughfares, Delancey Street and Essex Street, the
Essex Street Market continues to be a neighborhood hub, where ideas are
exchanged, new connections are made, and where delicious bites can
always be found; and
WHEREAS, The Essex Street Market pushes on alongside the development
of Essex Crossing, where the market will continue to be a center piece
of the Lower East Side's flourishing and diverse tradition; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Essex Street
Market; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Essex Street Market in
Manhattan's Lower East Side; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Essex Street Market.
