LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Linda Jenkins upon the occasion of her
retirement after 50 years of distinguished service to the City of New
York and CWA Local 1180

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed resi-
dents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Linda Jenkins upon the occasion of her retirement after 50 years of
distinguished service to the City of New York, and CWA Local 1180, to be
celebrated at a party on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at the Manhattan
Penthouse, New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, For the past 50 years, Linda Jenkins rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the City of New York, and CWA
Local 1180, earning the admiration, esteem and affection of her
colleagues; and
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Linda Jenkins earned a Bach-
elor of Science degree from Iona College, and a Master of Science degree
in Adult Education from Fordham University; and
WHEREAS, In 1964, Linda Jenkins began her career with the New York
City Department of Welfare as a stenographer; she was then promoted to
Senior Stenographer, and was assigned as a Secretary to the Senior Case
Supervisor; three years later, she was transferred to the Prospect
Welfare Center, and worked as Secretary to the Director; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1969, Linda Jenkins worked for the Euclid
Welfare Center as a Secretary to a Case Supervisor; after two years, she
became an Income Maintenance Supervising Clerk, and in 1972, she was
promoted to Administrative Assistant as an Income Maintenance Supervi-
sor; and
WHEREAS, Five years later, Linda Jenkins transferred to the Food Stamp
Program assigned to F11 as a Group Supervisor; in 1978, she became a
Principal Administrative Associate I, and Assistant Site Manager; a year
later, she attained the position of Principal Administrative Associate
III, and thereafter, was assigned as Site Manager at F12; in 1980, she
returned to F11 as Site Manager; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, Linda Jenkins became active in Local 1180 of the
Communications Workers of America as a Shop Steward, and worked on the
Union's Education Committee; in 1978, she was elected to the CWA Local
1180 Executive Board as a Member-at-Large, and in 1982, she was voted
First Vice President; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Linda Jenkins negotiated contracts, and
organized new titles into the Union, bringing in over two thousand new
members; she also handled civil service classification, personnel
issues, as well as developed and implemented education and career train-
ing programs for CWA Local 1180 members; and
WHEREAS, Linda Jenkins, an integral member of CWA Local 1180, oversaw
the Union's involvement in the New York City's Joint Labor-Management
Quality of Work Life Program; she also served as a trustee of the
Union's Welfare and Education funds, which provide benefits for CWA
Local 1180 members and retirees, as well as chaired the civil service
committee, and served on the editorial committee for the CWA Local 1180
newspaper, the COMMUNIQUE; and
WHEREAS, An advocate for learning, Linda Jenkins was instrumental in
developing and promoting several educational opportunities including
undergraduate and graduate degree programs for CWA Local 1180 members;
she was committed to enhancing the workplace skills of the Union's

members, and developed and implemented several programs such as compre-
hensive skills training and civil service exam preparation courses; and
WHEREAS, Linda Jenkins established a state-of-the-art computer center
at CWA Local 1180 headquarters, and was a proponent for the civil
service merit system, promoting effective government for the City of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Linda Jenkins was affiliated with the Coalition of Black
Trade Unionists, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the NAACP, CWA
Minority Caucus, and was a delegate for the New York City Central Labor
Council; and
WHEREAS, Throughout Linda Jenkins' illustrious career, she served with
loyalty, honor and distinction, and was governed by a keen sense of duty
and always showed a unique grasp of human problems in her official acts;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Linda Jenkins upon the occasion of her retirement after 50 years
of distinguished service to the City of New York and the CWA Local 1180;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Linda Jenkins.
