LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Malverne High School upon the
occasion of its designation as recipient of the Schools of Opportunity
Gold Award by the National Education Policy Center
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishment clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in the education of the youth of the Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Malverne High School upon the occasion of its designation as recip-
ient of the Schools of Opportunity Gold Award by the National Education
Policy Center, to be celebrated at the Board of Education Meeting on
Tuesday, June 9, 2015, in the Howard T. Herber Middle School Auditorium;
and
WHEREAS, A School of Opportunity is one which serves as a model,
informing and inspiring the efforts of educators and communities
throughout the United States, promoting both excellence and equity; and
WHEREAS, The National Education Policy Center seeks to identify and
recognize excellent public high schools, such as Malverne, which active-
ly strive to close opportunity gaps by engaging in practices that build
on students' strengths, thereby creating engaging and supported learning
opportunities for all students; and
WHEREAS, Malverne High School has a culture which encourages students
to engage in rigorous coursework while maintaining a "success for all
students" philosophy that is built around expanding learning opportu-
nities well outside the traditional school day; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of its Principal, Dr. Vincent
Romano, the school has expanded access to higher-level Advanced Place-
ment courses while providing support such as increased class time and an
additional class period every other day; this is coupled with an exten-
sive eight-week after-school review program leading into the College
Board Examinations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Malverne High School has teamed up with local
colleges to provide its students with enrichment in math and science
through Adelphi University's Saturday STEP program; during the summer
months, English language learners receive services from Hofstra Univer-
sity, which enables students to continue to expand their language devel-
opment when school is not in session; and
WHEREAS, Malverne High School has continually demonstrated an impres-
sive dedication, an unwavering devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm
for the quality of educational programs and opportunities offered for
the benefit of its faculty and students as well as for the entire commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, The Schools of Opportunity Gold Award stands as a resolute
testimony to Malverne High School's standards of excellence, its uncom-
promising values, unparalleled dedication, and the special teamwork of
its family of students, parents, teachers and administrators, who share
common goals and uncommon expectations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Malverne High School upon the occasion of its designation
as recipient of the Schools of Opportunity Gold Award by the National
Education Policy Center, noting the significance of its accomplishment
and recognizing the role such effective schools play in shaping the
quality of life in their community, State and Nation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Vincent Romano, Principal of Malverne High School.
