LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Correction Officer Lori Brown for her
extraordinary service in 2014 to be recognized with a Medal by the New
York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision on June
11, 2015
WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is moved to
honor those individuals who serve to preserve and protect such values,
lauding particularly their unwavering courage and dedication in the
daily performance of their duties; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Correction
Officer Lori Brown for her extraordinary service in 2014 to be recog-
nized with a Medal by the New York State Department of Corrections and
Community Supervision on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at its Training Acade-
my in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, On September 17, 2014, Sullivan Correction Officer Lori Brown
was assigned to D-Block Control and noted a microphone on a staff radio
being repeatedly activated; as a result, she visually checked on the
location of the D-Block officers, observed a fellow Correction Officer
engaged in a struggle with an inmate and immediately called for assist-
ance; and
WHEREAS, After observing the inmate holding the officer around his
neck and trapped against the inmate's cell gate, Correction Officer Lori
Brown reacted without hesitation or concern for her own well-being and
opened the cell gate in an effort to free her colleague; and
WHEREAS, Subsequently, the inmate was forced to release his hold,
allowing the officer to regain his breath; and
WHEREAS, Correction Officer Lori Brown's attention to duty and her
quick response allowed responding staff the time necessary to arrive on
the scene and prevent any life threatening injuries to the Correction
Officer who was transported to the local hospital; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman should be meritoriously commended
for remaining calm under pressure and for showing valor and true courage
while performing a lifesaving deed; her quick thinking helped save the
life of a fellow officer and without her professionalism, the Department
could have suffered a tremendous loss; and
WHEREAS, The management and operation of prisons is difficult work,
requiring equal amounts of patience, discipline and creativity; the
dedicated correction officers who staff New York State's prisons daily
apply themselves to ensuring the custody, safety, and well-being of the
inmates in their care; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Correction Officer Lori Brown for her extraordinary service in
2014 to be recognized with a Medal by the New York State Department of
Corrections and Community Supervision on June 11, 2015; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Correction Officer Lori Brown.
