LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New
York upon the occasion of hosting its Beautillion/Cotillion to celebrate
the Jr. 100 Class of 2015 on May 30, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with its
time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those organiza-
tions which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural
diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York upon the occasion of hosting its
Beautillion/Cotillion to celebrate the Jr. 100 Class of 2015 on Satur-
day, May 30, 2015, at the Hilton Midtown, New York City; and
WHEREAS, One Hundred Black Men, Inc. began in New York City in 1963,
as an organization of like-minded business, political and community
leaders who met to advocate for improvement in conditions in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, These remarkable gentlemen envisioned an organization which
would capitalize on the collective power of community to address issues
of inequities and to empower African Americans to become agents of
change in their communities; these visionaries were business and indus-
try leaders such as Robert Mangum, Cyril Tyson, J. Bruce Llewellyn,
Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher and David Dinkins, who forever
changed the face of black social, economic and political empowerment;
and
WHEREAS, As a symbol of solidarity, the group embraced the name, One
Hundred Black Men; this new, powerful civic organization would grow to
be the voice of numerous black business, social and community leaders;
and
WHEREAS, A community and youth-serving group, One Hundred Black Men,
Inc. provides scholarships, educational support, economic empowerment,
mentoring, health and wellness initiatives and an overall voice of the
African American community; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, the Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx was
founded by members of One Hundred Black Men, Inc.; it was the first
all-male public school to open in New York City in 30 years; in 2008, a
second Eagle Academy opened in Brooklyn, and in 2010, a Queens school
opened; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, One Hundred Black Men, Inc.
plays a proactive role in leveraging its collective talent, ability and
energy toward achieving meaningful gains for the African American commu-
nity; its initiatives focus on education through mentoring, wealth
building strategies, fostering economic development and raising aware-
ness of health issues affecting its communities; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of President, Michael J.
Garner, One Hundred Black Men, Inc. continually seeks to provide leader-
ship in the African American community through engaged partnerships,
educational institutions, community activism and philanthropy; its goal
is to engage its communities to address inequities, and seek social and
economic justice; and
WHEREAS, The national organization, 100 Black Men of America, Inc.,
based in Atlanta, Georgia, began in 1986, and has grown to a confeder-
ation of over 116 chapters internationally; it has become one of the
preeminent African American organizations that champion issues that face
our communities; and

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor those
organizations and individuals of significance who add strength, vigor,
and inspiration to the ethnic diversity and quality of life in the
communities of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York upon the occasion of
hosting its Beautillion/Cotillion to celebrate the Jr. 100 Class of 2015
on May 30, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael J. Garner, President, One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of
New York.
