LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Steuben County Manager Mark R. Alger
upon the occasion of his retirement after more than 33 years of distin-
guished public service on June, 30 2015

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those individ-
uals who are devoted to the welfare of their community and its citizen-
ry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Steuben
County Manager Mark R. Alger upon the occasion of his retirement after
more than 33 years of distinguished public service on Tuesday, June 30,
2015; and
WHEREAS, A native of Hornell, New York, Mark R. Alger earned his bach-
elor's degree in Geography from the State University of New York at
Geneseo; he then went on to receive his master's degree in Geography
from Western Illinois University; and
WHEREAS, Mark R. Alger became employed as a Research Coordinator for
the National Association of Regional Councils in Washington, D.C. in
1977; two years later, he moved to Steuben County and served as a Senior
Planner in the County Planning Department; and
WHEREAS, In 1981, Mark R. Alger was appointed to the position of the
Steuben County Planning Director, and in 1984, he was selected as the
county's first Administrator; and
WHEREAS, In December of 1995, Mark R. Alger held the title of Deputy
Commissioner for Administration with the New York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets in Albany, New York, a position he held for
three years; and
WHEREAS, Mark R. Alger returned to Steuben County in 1999, to serve as
its Social Services Commissioner; on September 25, 2000, he was reap-
pointed to the position of Steuben County Administrator; and
WHEREAS, Mark R. Alger furthered his education by obtaining his
Master's degree in Public Administration in 2006, from James Madison
University; two years later, he became the Deputy County Manager for
Steuben County; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, Steuben County adopted a charter creating the County
Manager position which Mark R. Alger was subsequently appointed to in
2014; in addition, he has represented the county on numerous boards and
committees, such as the New York State Association of Counties; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, and their three chil-
dren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Steuben County Manager Mark R. Alger upon the occasion of his
retirement after more than 33 years of distinguished public service on
June 30, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mark R. Alger.
