LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Donald Gillot, courageous
firefighter, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Donald Gillot of West Hempstead, New York, died on Thursday,
May 14, 2015, at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Born in Brooklyn, New York, Donald Gillot lived his entire
life in West Hempstead where he attended high school; and
WHEREAS, In 1956, Donald Gillot joined the Lakeview Fire Department at
the age of 18, proudly serving his community by driving ambulances and
hook-and-ladder fire trucks; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his first 50 years of volunteering with the Lake-
view Fire Department, Donald Gillot bravely responded to more than 50
percent of fire calls; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed firefighter was also a dedicated employee at
the Hempstead Town Highway Department for 30 years; in 1997, he retired
as a truck driver and snow plow operator for the Town of Hempstead; and
WHEREAS, In his later years, Donald Gillot served as a Trustee at the
Lakeview Fire Department; he also maintained care of equipment and
ensured supplies were well stocked; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and honors for his excep-
tional service, Donald Gillot was made an Emeritus member of the Lake-
view Fire Department, and upon his death, became an Honorary Chief; and
WHEREAS, Donald Gillot is survived by his brother, and several nieces
and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Donald Gillot distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, Donald Gillot's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Donald Gillot leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Donald Gillot; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Donald Gillot.
