LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Joseph Scanlan upon the occasion
of his retirement after 11 years of distinguished service as Principal
of Notre Dame High School, Batavia, New York, on June 27, 2015
WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its
history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its educa-
tional professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the illustrious careers of those outstanding
educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have been instru-
mental in developing character and academic excellence in the young
people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Dr. Joseph Scanlan upon the occasion of his retirement after 11 years of
distinguished service as Principal of Notre Dame High School, Batavia,
New York, to be celebrated at a picnic held in his honor on Saturday,
June 27, 2015; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated educator for the last 43 years, Dr. Joseph "Dr.
Joe" Scanlan has held the esteemed title of Principal of Notre Dame High
School since 2004; prior to moving to a private Catholic school, he
worked at Byron-Bergen Central School, Bergen, New York, for 15 years,
and York Central School District, Retsof, New York, for another 17
years; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his leadership role, Dr. Joseph Scanlan wrote
a monthly newsletter, keeping both students and staff informed about
events and day-to-day operations within Notre Dame High School, and
oversaw Advancement Office duties; he also enjoyed attending all athlet-
ic games, plays and music performances; and
WHEREAS, Under Dr. Joseph Scanlan's luminous leadership, Notre Dame
High School has been a "Top 10" Western New York private school for the
last decade; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Scanlan considers his students and staff at Notre
Dame High School to be his family, crediting them with much of the
success of this vital educational institution; and
WHEREAS, After his retirement, Dr. Joseph Scanlan plans on spending
time with his family, taking walks, playing golf, and traveling to
Ireland; in addition, he would like to volunteer his time and energies
to worthy causes and organizations; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his loving wife, Kate, his
treasured son, Mike, and his cherished daughter-in-law, Julie, as well
as his beloved granddaughter, Caroline, all of whom feel privileged to
be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Educators like Dr. Joseph Scanlan provide a tremendous
service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
young people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in
their future years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Scanlan has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of the Notre Dame High School, as well as on the community-at-
large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impres-
sive dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
education by providing their skills and talents to our schools; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Joseph Scanlan upon the occasion of his retirement as Prin-
cipal of Notre Dame High School, after 11 years of dedicated service in
education, and for his significant contributions to education in New
York State; and to wish him continued success in all of his future
endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Joseph Scanlan.
