LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Arlene Fleishman upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor
bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the great
State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those civic-minded community members who dedicate their lives and
careers to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Arlene Fleish-
man upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of a Liberty
Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York
State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 5, 1935, Arlene Fleishman was raised in
Pelham Parkway, the Bronx, New York; she attended Public Schools 105 and
83, and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in 1953; and
WHEREAS, After graduation, Arlene Fleishman pursued a career in the
finance industry; in 1957, she married Bernard Fleishman, and moved to
Kew Gardens, Queens; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, Arlene Fleishman and her husband moved into Linden
Towers Co-op No. 4 located on 137th Street in Flushing, Queens, where
she still resides 55 years later; and
WHEREAS, After retiring from her job to raise her two sons, Arlene
Fleishman joined the Parent Association Executive Board at P.S. 214 in
1968, serving as Program Chairperson; four years later, she was elected
President of the Parent Association, and dedicated herself to school and
community, becoming an active participant in School District 25 affairs;
and
WHEREAS, In 1975, Arlene Fleishman held the position of President of
the President's Council of District 25, the organization representing
all P.T.A. Presidents in the district; at the end of her two year term,
she was selected as one of the first parents to serve on the District 25
School Board; and
WHEREAS, Throughout 27 years of service to the District 25 School
Board, Arlene Fleishman held the title of President for 16 years; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Arlene Fleishman re-entered the business world by
securing a job as Financial Manager at The North Flushing Swim Club; in
this capacity, she helped open the North Flushing Senior Center, which
is currently still in operation; and
WHEREAS, Eight years later, Arlene Fleishman became the Fiscal Manager
at Family Focus Adoption Agency in Little Neck, Queens, a position from
which she would officially retire in 2001; and
WHEREAS, After her retirement, Arlene Fleishman continues to serve her
community; in 1990, she served on the Board of Directors of Linden
Towers Co-op No. 4, and was elected to the position of President two
years later, a title she still holds today; and
WHEREAS, At this same time, Arlene Fleishman assumed the responsibil-
ity of the Presidency of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association, repres-
enting more than 4,000 people; in addition, she served her community for
three terms as State Committee Woman; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, this remarkable woman was appointed to Queens Commu-
nity Board 7, and presently holds the position of Chair of the Education
and Youth Committee; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Arlene Fleishman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Arlene Fleishman.
